before it craps out? I have a 1998 Honda Civic EX, SOHC, with 81K miles on it. Have taken really good care of it, and was just curious at what point do they give up the ghost? Basically, am I looking at a time issue or miles issue when it comes to Honda's??? Thanks!

 

Im at 219K on my 1999 Civic LX D16y7 100% original, do the maintenance and it will take care of you for years to come. Only parts replaced are tune up items, timing belt and water pump, replace fluids and filters at normal intervals and you should be trouble free.

well y8 like to get spun bearings, not sure why, may have to do with the high powered vtec or something.. Either way, if your engine does give up the ghost, please rebuild it because buying another engine would just deplete the stock of engines left and keep these cars from staying on the road. I want these cars to stay on the road as long as possible.

i've seen plenty in the 300k range. but typically they meet a fate before that, whether it be theft, accidents, death by previous owner negligence, or they are otherwise swapped and re-configured.

 

Only 180k here. I'm going to drive this until they stop making parts for it. Saw one guy post he was on 400K.

 

400k is not uncommon on meticulously maintained cars. There's been reports of volovos, hondas, toyotas, etc with 1 Million miles on them.

I have 231k miles on my stock d16y7. It leaks and burns a little oil, but other than that, it's ok. Slow as hell but still great on gas.

Only original part that has failed on me was the window regulator.

 

realistically...there is no limit! Even if your engine wears out, a new one could be cheaply and easily purchased to keep it going and going. Most people give up on a car, once the body starts to rust out, so i guess that should be the main concern

 

I wouldn't be worrying at 81,000 miles at least It's not broken in until it hits 100,000 miles anyway.

My old Honda dealership in Delaware had a board up with different customer cars that were over 300,000 miles or so I think it was.

My '98 Civic EX was already over 81,000 miles when I bought it almost eight years ago (it had 87,000). The car has 159,000 miles on it now, but I just put a swap in 40 miles ago. Nothing was wrong with the original D18Y8. I just wanted to upgrade.

 

they spin because the connecting rod only has one oil port on it, compared to the 2 on the z6 rods.

 

My friend has a '91 da with 307,xxx on the clock. I'm pretty sure the motor has been swapped out at some point but the body is still in good shape. He's fixed most of the rust spots so it definitely won't die that way. He keeps up on the maintenance like clockwork. His is the first car I've ever actually seen in the 300,000 range..

 

I have seen Honda's with 400k realistically if your car needs it replace it and it will last forever as long as you don't crash it ! Change oil and trans oil on time and you will have no problems. You will never have to make a car payment again for the rest of your life !

 

Sister's car is a 92 Civic with original motor B7 (never been opened up for anything and she is the original owner). 245k with nothing other than scheduled maintainence. My car, 94 Civic with original motor B8. Burning oil at 160k, complete rebuild required and done at 170k. I'm not the original owner so I can't say it was taken care of properly from the start but my sister's car is still driving like it always has without issue, it even still has it's original cat and passes smog just fine. Like someone said above, take care of it and it will take care of you.

as everyone else has been saying... just do your general maintence and you will be fine... got my 93 del sol (with the d16z6) at 130k and drove it cross the country twice with other several hour (1/2-full day) road trips in between. now has 175k... at least 3 years later...only thing ive replaced is thermostat and brake master cylinder (besides typical tune up stuff)

as long as you take care of it (dont beat on it every second), it will take care of you

although i will say from my own experience... if purchasing a car (any make and model) try to stay away from ones that have been modded especially by cheap parts. typically if they have been modded they have been beat on and if it was modded by cheap parts then that means repairs were prob done with cheaper parts and not taken care of as well.

i had a 92 civic with a d16z6 that was burning oil and vtec smoking pretty bad with only 120k on it... cuz previous owners beat the **** out of it and didnt take care of it right

 

the old d16y8 that came in my 97 civic was purchased with 80,xxx on it. that engine was then in three other cars, beat on, had a 50 shot for a while, brought to the rev limit cold daily, saw non-stop burnouts and still got 310xxx on the clock(and yes, i kept track out of it lol) it developed a small knock at around 2500-3000 rpm but otherwise it ran fine. i finally tore the block down after pulling it for the last time and found 4 spun rod bearings and a destroyed oil pump....

 

My friends dad rolled over 1 mil on his 89 coupe when we were in chicago with him a few years back. There's a polaroid of it somewhere at my old roommates place.

 

My understanding is that the Y8 oil starvation issue doesn't usually come into play unless you're turboed, have power, etc.

 

Exactly. Crappy maintenance also is a factor.
