This is a stupid question probably, but I've been hearing different responses almost every time I ask. Is it legal to ride in between cars in moderate to heavy traffic? How bout in NJ?

Also, is it legal to ride between cars to get in front at a red light? I have seen this done many times.

Today I was forced to ride on the white lines for almost 20 miles because I couldn't slow down for traffic....damn bike overheats if I don't keep moving.

 

If I recall, its not legal in VA. I haven't ridden there in 2 years so it might have changed.

yup....with air cooled bikes, sitting in traffic would kill them, so state law says they can cruise at 20mph? ithink. to stay alive.

 

I wonder if it's legal in TN ???? If it is **** traffic from now on. If you do go between cars be carefull not to get hit by an arm,door,or anything else for that matter.

 

I got a override switch for my fan rigged up. The thing still runs kinda hot though. Last time I checked its illegal in MD and VA but hopefully I'm wrong. Shammo I highly suggest you put a toggle switch inline w/ your fan wiring. It's quite easy to hide it under the dash yet quite accesible. I remember you posting about the gix awhile ago w/ the same prob. Apparently its a known issue.

 

Illegal in all 50 states I believe. Just because there is traffic, doesnt mean you can lane split.

Legal in most states, check your laws. The reasoning has nothing to do with overheating. It has to do with statistics of where most motorcycle accidents occur. Yup thats right... People hit from the rear while at a traffic light. Very high because people dont pay attention. You need to check your local laws though.

Lane splitting is legal here in CA but i believe you can only do it going x miles faster than the vehicle beside you.

 

Yup legal in CA........Only thing that sucks is some people are bike haters and will move over and try to box you in so you can't pass them, and some are even bad enough to try and knock you over.......

 

So what happens if you hit them and damage their car? Or you get hurt? Are they responsible since they don't know the law?

It's similar to driving around here....when two lanes merge into one and a car tries to block you so you can't get past them. IT'S STILL TWO F'IN LANES DUMBASS!

i didnt find any info about other states than CA that allow lane splitting, but there are some interesting stories in there

 

happened a couple of weeks ago...a stoopid *** kid threw a door open at the first bike of 12 riding on the shoulder...there was an accident and were getting off the next exit. bad mistake the kid he threw the door open at has a severe anger mangenment problem..ended up ripping the kid out of the sunroof of the locked car.. cops, flatbeds and punk *** kids crying...the cops let everyone go thankfully..no impounds

 

From what I remember (it happened to a friend of mine) yes the other car is responsible. They would consider that wreckless driving on the other person, and on a worse case scenario attempted vehicular man slaughter......

Lane sharing isnt allowed in AZ, though moving up in traffic at a Red light is allowed as long as the other traffic isnt moving.
As far as the other ppl out there opening doors and trying to lane block you, its the same as if you were in a car and they were trying to do it to you then. It isnt legal then nor when your on a bike! Get a sticker like my bike that says "Get off my ***" of course an occasional flying bird and a few select vulgarities do come in handy.

Its called sharing lanes. Its 100% legal. If someone hits you then its obviously their fault but if you hit them then blah blah blah. The insurance company will most likely split it 50/50 fault. Never known anyone that had it happen to them like that tho.
