Blown head gasket on 1988 Honda CRX?
I see some fresh oil on the left side of the engine, below the area where the head "mates" with the block. Also near the timing belt and below the valve cover.
When accelerating white smoke comes out of the exhaust. I actually stood near the exhaust while my dad floored it and it is a sweet smell.
Is this a blown head gasket?
Ps. Does this engine have an overhead cam?

I'm feeling kind of shitty cause it's my first car. Bought it off a dude who was selling it for his friend last weekend. On the ride home it was already letting out white smoke at high RPM's. I hope it isn't too much $$$ to fix.

Get a chilton or haynes instuctional manual from your local auto parts store for the year of your rexy, buy a torque wrench and go to Honda and buy a new head gasket. depending on the mileage you might need to take it to the machine shop and have the head resurfaced.----Read the manual--- there are also instructions in the crx FAQ. i hope this helps. Gah, a mechanic came over and had me turn on the car.
Now it is making really smelly smoke... he said it was burning oil.
He diagnosed an oil leak from the distributor gasket, and that the valve seals are bad. Since we don't know when the timing belt was changed, he offered to do all three jobs for $700.
I'm willing to do it myself after lots of research. How hard is it to replace valve seals?

valve stem seals? not bad at all, if you are patient. all you really need is a spring compressor and there are many ways to get that done.
without air to put in the cylinder do one cylinder at a time at TDC. the piston will stop a valve from falling in.
also, it is very unlikely just the dist oring is leaking. the shaft seal is going to be worn out too.

Okay, set TDC for piston #1 and replace seals.
Then set TDC for #2 and replace seals and so on..
After #4 I set piston #1 at TDC again, right?

white smoke and sweet smell....all signs point to coolent in the combustion chamber, check the coolent level when the cars cold and measure how much your down. run the car and see how much lower it gets. oil burns blue. best bet is to pull the whole motor and freshin it up, looks like it could use it.

I'll be opening the motor up in the days coming.
I'm going to be killing 2 (or 3) birds with one stone, going to be replacing the valve seals, head gasket, and valve cover gasket. Then I'll see where I go from there.
I really hope it is either the head gasket or the valve seals... I really hope it isn't something further down (piston rings?
