Default 88 Rex Si Overheating issue

I just bought my first rex and when you turn it on within two minutes the temp gauge go's above the red but the motor is not hot it has full coolant and there is no back flow through the radiator when you take the cap off but then when the motor warms up it starts to blow out some warm heat there is also black liquid dripping out of the stock exhaust what could this be? hope there is enough details if you need anymore just let me no. thanks

your temperature gauge doesn't work.
just get a new one and see if changes.

So no coolant bypasses into the overflow bottle?

Check the coolant temperature sensor.

Another vote for faulty gauge. Happened on mine, it would randomly jump into the red.

ok well as soon as i can im going to change the coolant temp sensor if it still dose it then i will buy a aftermarket gauge and if its dose it on that then the head is most likely cracked. Its hard to find D16A6 heads around here nobody really messes with them they usually only play around with the z6 or y8 because of vtech

You should try downloading a service manual, they allow you to run test to find if the CTS is running as it should or not.

ya well then i would have to change the wire harness because im running obd0 cant i just buy a b18a1 pre 92 that is obd0 and swap that in i no i would need mounts, trans, axles, and what else? I really don't want to buy your y8 head and nooch has a good point lol.

Edit: Found a good post on here so i can swap a b18a1 90-91 obd0 in with no problem with a p23 ecu, trans, axles and intermediate shaft 90-93 integra, custom hasport shift linkage pre made, hasport mounts, 92 integra gsr upper hose 90 integra lower hose needs trimed, 90-93 rear transmission bracket must be 5 speed, 90-93 integra throttle cable. and that should be all the parts i need sounds like a eazy swap

Sounds like a drastic measure over a potentially minor problem.

yeah but I will have more potential with the b series than the d and get more out of it. This crx is my project I have a daily driver so im in no hurry to get it on the road. Im gonna call some yard tomorrow to see if they have any 90-91 integra's running with the parts i need and see how much they want if its over priced then I will have to do some more looking. but ill sell the d16a6 and trans for some more cash to fund the project =}

I changed my mind again im gonna keep that d16 after looking at it im not ready to let it part yet. I think im going to go with a y8 head swap keep the a6 intake manifold and fuel rail and just get a v tech controller to wire up. Let me no if i can do this im just not ready for messing with wires yet.

Its most likely what these guys said either the gauge itself or the coolant temp. sensor so how did we start talkin engine swaps because of that?lol

The D16A6 head is the same as any D15 88-91 civic/crx std,dx,si. Also 92-95 civic dx and lx are the same as well. Same Honda part interchange fyi

The engine swap was brought up by me because i don't want to run a stock D16A6 with only 105Hp i want to do a little building on it like build a new bottom end and rebuild the top end i was told the y8 head would bring up the compression ratio and the v tech is just a plus and when all is done i hope to get around 150-160Hp also with some bolt on parts like header intake and a good tune trying to spend around 800 or so just on the motor parts not including the y8 head. With the right build i think i should be able to do this very easy but i don't no you guys with the experience do so help me out. The only think i do no is i don't want to go B series just yet.

I think u have a blown head gasket if water is dripping down the exhaust pipe, try checking ur thermostat, water pump, radiator or remove radiator cap and start ur car and if water comes out of ur radiator with pressure most likely ur head gasket is gone, hope this helps...
