Default SRI in stock airbox

Hey everyone, I'm new to the site (and hondas in general). I've searched this and haven't found a definitive answer. I found a really cheap AEM SRI that I was thinking of buying, but I've read that these mostly just suck up hot air. So my question is, can a SRI be adapted to work with the stock airbox as a heatshield? I'm not interested in a CAI because I live in an area with pretty bad flooding. Car is a '96 LS.

might take some cutting/fabricating, but may be able to work, just depends on angle of piping, size of air filter, etc. Just make sure you have good air flow to the filter.

eh, i have one in my car, and the battery separates the intake from the engine a good bit. But i also removed the intake resonator in the fender to help get more cool air to it lol

You can do it! just find a small enough filter, or find a comptech ice box intake. but above everything the intake sucking up hot air is b.s you wont feel a difrence if it was in a box infact it might even just be pointless and be constricting the air flow throught the filter. just run it with out the box! you have a ls not a race car/motor!

To answer the question, it might work if the SRI tube is the right shape to get into the hole on the rear of the stock air box. However you wouldn't have anything to seal around the tube. The OEM air filter has a rubber seal around the filter base that seals up the hole in the air box.

IMHO the best route is to use a K&N RU-2820 universal filter, cut apart a stock air filter, attach the K&N to the stock air filter base, and run that in the stock air box with the stock intake tube. Then put together some PVC pipe to run from the bottom of the airbox to behind the turn signal, a.k.a. DIY Icebox (similar to the old Comptech Icebox intake system).

I've been running this setup for nearly a decade now in my GS-R. My K&N is actually coming up to the end of its 10 year warranty.

*edit* whoa I just saw that Bret Quimby (user BSQ on here and the original designer of the DIY Icebox) redesigned his system a few years back using 4" piping. I can't believe I never saw this before, I may have to redo mine now.

Here you can see the piping going from behind the turn signal area up to the stock air box on my car:

That looks pretty nice for a home job. I'll have to get myself to a home depot and see what I can do...

More info:

Here's the filter I use http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=ru-2820

And a pic of it in the stock air box with the front and rear caps of an OEM filter fitted on the K&N, fits 100% like stock:

I just had the air box cover off in this pic. I normally run it fully assembled.

I read the thread on T-I and I have a few questions. These are based on the assumption that the 4" kit was built:

I saw that some people have been fitting SRI tubes to their airbox.

My question is would there be gains in throttle response/power by switching between 2.75" GS-R app or the 3" ITR app?

My next question is based upon utilizing an SRI tube.

Would there be any benefit to using a velocity stack in the airbox? I noticed that the real Mugen kit has a venturi on the air filter. Would a velocity stack create a similar benifit?

Also, is a velocity stack necessary at the point of induction (air horn) or will the speaker tube work just fine?
