Default my D15B8 is burning oil and not smoking, not sure why please help!

I have a 94 coupe DD with a D15B8 engine in it. It only has 150k miles on it and it burns oil like crazy. It doesnt smoke at all, it runs strong, it drops about 2 oz of oil every 3,000 miles (between oil changes) but I have to add about a quart of oil every 1,000 miles or so. Where is this oil going?

dude. how do you know your not burning it???

i have a jdm d15 vtec and if it's in the driveway and someone pushes the gas pedal pretty far down it doesn't smoke at all.

but you cant see smoke if your at 6000rpm shifting down the highway. you wont see it. Unless it's a REALLY bad burning problem.

it's your rings. it's got 150k miles. they're just getting worn.

I have to add a little oil to my engine every other week. If I drive it nicely and concentrate on shifting better instead of racing ppl I don't burn hardly any oil. but if I take a long road trip and rev far to pass ppl etc. I will lose a little oil after a couple hundred miles.

youre either leaking it or burning it. No other way to lose oil in an engine.

Try a can of Engine restore. they sell them at Oreillys/autozone for like $10, and they can help with oil consumption. Its about all you can do unless you want to tear apart the engine, and replace the seals.

If its your valve seals, it wont be that hard of a job. Just time consuming.

I thought it might be my rings. I know im burning it, I really ment to say why am I burning so much but just didnt know why. So it could be my valve seals as well?

whats throwing me off on it being rings is I feel like im not losing any compression. I still have all the power like I did before it started to burn so much

Hammer on the gas while going down the road to the floor...If it smokes there it is the rings. Drive faster than normal then compression brake and if it smokes there valve guides. Its all based on the vacuum of the motor with where it leaks. That is the ghetto way to check it but works!

yeah but its cold here right now so all my vehicles smoke on start up. But the honda does a little more than the others. I just thought it was because its a 94 and everything else we have is pretty new.

ok so my wife goti n the car and i told her to run it up to 4k rpm's and I got a light white smoke. This took place after the car was already at normal running temp. So im figuring that I should change the piston rings and while the motor is out of the car, go a head and replace the valve stem seals and guides and maybe the valve stems as well

Do that little test then to see valves or pistons. Sounds like you did one part...do the other. You can always take the heads apart and use a valve lap tool and medium then fine polishing compound to reseat the valves while its apart. costs like ten bucks tops. Most likely the rings and the compression test will tell if the rings are bad, remember to do a wet test after the dry test.

Let me remind you:
ok so my wife goti n the car and i told her to run it up to 4k rpm's and I got a light white smoke This took place after the car was already at normal running temp.

So which is it??? Sounds like you are confusing yourself.

it was more like a blueish smoke. Im going to do a compression test then a leak down test this weekend. If the compression test is good, i would suspect its the valve seals. so the compression test should be what? ive heard 150 but is that the minimum it should be?

I agree with 2oz leaking isnt that much but its not normal that an engine burns 1q of oil every thousand miles

Wrong. Vtec does not use oil, oil scraper ring controls oil loss, crankcase oil is re-vented into the intake via PCV. No oil should be loss on any engine. Go on youtube...find a nice fully built turbo by a good shop and watch it on the dyno. No smoke will be seen even at high rpms. Good built motors do not burn oil.

The only motors that use oil are rotary engines (not sure about the new renesis). They use oil because the oil jets on the eccentrical shaft spray a small stream of oil to lubricate the rotors.

So I have a haynes manual but it doesnt have steps to perform a compression test or leak down. Can someone PM me and walk me through it step by step or give me a link? I searched but didnt get anything

He didn't say VTEC, he said engines, and every Otto cycle combustion engine does burn oil. Most of the time, it's not enough to notice. I've found it's a bit higher on Hondas due to the compression ratio; which is especially apparent in a VTEC motor.

Just because you don't see smoke doesn't mean no oil is being consumed. Has nothing to do with being built or whatever, because even the best will consume some oil. Rotaries do consume more than an Otto cycle due to the design. The renesis is knocked for that all the time, and there have been engine failures from oil loss. But even a new RX isn't blowing smoke out the back while consuming oil. If you see smoke, something is really wrong.
