So here is the story. I have a friend who bought a 93 Integ LS Auto with a bad head gasket for dirt cheep. He did not feel comfortable doing the head gasket by himself but he bought it anyways. His father then insisted on doing it for since he has done them before. Well his father got as far as putting the head back together and torquing it to spec (so he says). Well a friend of his said he will put the rest of it together. The friend went over and tried to help ... tried. I was then called and asked if i could put it back together since i am very skilled at doing this so i did. big mistake . I basically had to take it back down to where his father got to. Here is the thing. After getting it running we set it down and seems the transmission (Automatic) is stuck in reverse. The car will crank over and start when the Driver Gear selector is in Park or Neutral but it is in reverse. I did check the linkage to the transmission and it is installed into the trans and clamped down. I put my hand on it and had him shift it from driver shift selector and i do feel it moving inside the cable. Do not really know what to do from here.

Oh btw when father did the swap he split the engine and transmission and then did put them back together. It does not sound to me like it is a problem with the torque converter but i almost always deal with manual trans and if i do deal with an auto i am the one working on it.

Please post and see what i can come up with.

check the codes at the trans control module. it should be behind the main relay

is the s3 light on/blinking?

 

there is no warning lights on ... but they do work when the key in on initial accessory. i guess it is time to tear the tranny out.

 

well, the transmission worked before, yes? pretty sure this can be solved without pulling it. are you sure all connectors/harness are plugged in?

 

bad part is they bought the car with a bad head gasket so they have no idea. i will play with it a little moe and if i do not find it ... t speed conversion time. thx guys

 

maybe the gear selector on the transmission side?

 

yah i started playing with that but there is no adjustment ... although i did not try to remove it and reinstall it

 

well, i'd try seeing if there is a code present before pulling it out. the module is up under the dash to the left of the steering wheel. there will be an led on it which will flash accordingly if a code is present
