Hi All

New here so bear with me.

My 14 year old son is racing dirt tracks in a 93 civic d16z auto tranny.

Here's the problem, at the bigger tracks the auto tranny is up shifting into 3rd by it self. The gear selector is in 2nd, he's not even close to the rev limit and it up shifts.

I'm sure it's some type fail safe mode or something in the ECU

Any body know how to eliminate the problem? (new manual tranny is last resort, I have two spare cars all with autos)

Car works great on 1/4 mile tracks (got his first trophy last week) does not up shift, but he does lift coming in the corners, on the 3/8 and 1/2 mile tracks its rugged all the way around.

any ideas or are we stuck?

i bet your proud. good job so far.
have you tried any other ecu? (cars computer)
what if he tries to hold it in 2nd? dirt racing im sure needs both hands on the weel
are the other cars working and running? take 1 of those and drive in down the road the same way to see if it does the same (or unless the other 2 cars are parts cars)

i have a '94 d16z6 with an auto and my car does that too, i believe its just a failsafe (even though it wont upshift while in first)

Thanks Rick, I drove that car all last year and never did better than 3rd. Some kids have B*lls the size of dump trucks. No fear and all smiles.

Good point about 1st gear! At the start we use first, he doesn't shift to second until on the rev limit. we installed a stop device that won't allow the shifter to go in to third without two hands.

we tried 15" tires but lost too much on the bottom.

Has to be in the ecu? I could try another ecu and see what happens.

you could also have the ecu chipped and tuned to do whatever you want(just a suggestion)

I have not been able to find anyone that could program the ecu for the tranny
