Default Engine shuts off immediatly after start up

91 DA

To make it start, I have to step on the gas and rev it high to start it up. Runs fine after that. Even starts up fine without reving it after a second or third trip. Something on its way out? What do you all think the problem is?

Things replaced OEM.

I had this problem and my issue ended up being the power wire connector for the alternator being broke

does it shut off right when the key drops back to the II position immediately after start up? if so, when that happens, do the gauge cluster lights stay illuminated? or no illumination whatsoever?

hmmm... right when the key drops back to II the car shuts off. As for the cluster lights staying illuminated? I forgot to observe this one. I'll have to wait until it happens again. So if they do stay on, the ignition switch is ruled out right?

Yup I just started it and no illumination on the cluster.

I've seen a DIY on cleaning the switch. You all think I should go this route or should I fork up 50 bucks and buy another one?

No harm for me either or. I just wanted if cleaning the contacts on the switch is going to extend the life of it.

Wow the San Diego dealership switch is about 100 bucks!! Out of state such as arizona or florida cost half of that.

Just an update on the switch replacement

I went ahead and cleaned it up instead of buying a new one. There were a few things to remove just to get to get access to the switch itself. (knee bolster, and steering wheel etc.) You'll need an L shaped phillips screw driver just to get the two screws holding the switch down. I didn't bother taking the whole switch out of the car. I didn't want to bother unrouting and snipping tie wraps. I let it dangle and cleaned the other half on my bench with a dremel rotory tool. Thank God for that. Much faster and easier. So far starting up is good. Thanks guys for your help.

BTW. My switch looked dirty just like the DIY pictures.
