Gas lid won't open - can't add gas ('99 LX)
'99 LX.
The lid I'm talking about is the lid that pops open when you press down on the "open gas lid" lever next to the driver's seat. The lever where if you pull up, the trunk pops open. I can't add gas to the car and I've driven it about 30 miles since the gas light went on (to get back to my garage).
When I press down I can hear a click by the gas lid, but it doesn't open nor does it open if I have somebody prying gently on it when I press the lever.
Any ideas? And if I end up having to take off the back quarter panel, are there any pictures showing me where the bolts are and do I need to take off the back bumper first?
Thanks!

OK, I somehow got the lid open and saw that the release lever was apparently working properly, so I cleaned everything up with some windex and paper towels and closed it again.
Won't open. I tried for another five minutes or so but couldn't get it to open (with somebody else pushing in the release lever), I'm at the point where the lid is bending out of shape.
Now that I think about it, my bet is that the release tab (that little black thing that retracts, allowing the lid to open) isn't retracting enough because of gunk or whatever. But I still need to get it open again to put some gas in there.

You can try to go through the trunk area, by taking off one of the side interior panels. This guy found that his cable assembly looked uncrimped.

Easiest way to open it is to pull the release lever and have someone else open the door while you're holding the lever open.
Next easiest way is to get your keys and shove one key into the gap between the bottom of the door and the gas lid. Pull the release lever and the weight of your keys will pull the door open.
Once the door is open, I would get a piece of tape and tape the release pin into the open position, then close the door and see if it pops out freely. If it doesn't pop out freely, you can look at the way it's constructed and bend the proper tabs to allow it to pop out freely. If it does pop out freely, I'd look at the release pin to make sure it's not hanging up on the door or if it retracts all the way when the lever is pulled.

With the release lever pulled (pushed), it still wouldn't open. I tried gently pulling with a paint can opener (fits perfectly in there), trying to push whatever the release thing was hung up on, wouldn't work.
I finally disconnected it by going through the trunk like redbull-1 suggested and filled up the tank. Now that I have some time, and gas in the tank (it took 16.0 gallons), I'll go through the steps you (slomofo) said.
Thanks for the help!

Check the fuel doors hinge spring. It may have become deformed/damaged in such a way that it no longer opens the door. The spring may not be a coil spring, but just a piece of spring steal.
