Well if you have MPH on your Tachometer then something is definitely and seriously wrong.

But seriously, sounds like the actual Needle/gauge is broken. Probably would be easiest to just swap in a whole new(used) cluster.

Is this a tachometer or speedometer problem?

if its not the VSS its the wiring towards it. happened my car, and after months of testing, it was the loom at fault. hope this helps

Is this a manual or automatic transmission? Please post the year of the car.

It could be the three things that have been identified: Speed Sensor (VSS), wiring, Speedometer.

One option for troubleshooting: get a multimeter with gator clip wires, put the car up on jackstands, disassemble the dash to get to the speedometer, clip the multimeter leads onto the wires going into the speedometer, run the car at various speeds. (HOLY CRAP, MAKE SURE THAT THE WHEELS ARE OFF THE GROUND AND THE JACK STANDS ARE SECURE.) If the signal from the VSS is correct, the speedometer is bad. If it is not correct, clip on to the output from the VSS and check that. (You will need an assistant to press the accelerator pedal.) If the signal is correct, the wiring harness is bad.

Good Luck

The other day I started my hatch and the needle on the tach was actually flipped and was hanging at the bottom, and when I revved up it was going 'up' but counterclockwise as opposed to the typical rotation of the needle. very weird, however, once it warmed up it reverted to its normal course. not that this helps of course, just throwin it out there

use search cause i see this question all the time. its either one of two things, the cluster or the VSS. how to tell?

do you have a check engine light?

If yes its the VSS
If no its the cluster.

My tach used to jump from 0 to 3 or 4000 rpms, and while driving the spedo would do the same. Now tach is completely dead. And only when i first drive off in the morning the spedo works for a few minutes then goes dead. It isn't the dizzy or vss. Both are showing readins on the diagnostic. So i'm now gonna swap clusters and see.
