Icon2 Unlucky timing belt?

Well, my <1000 mile timing belt looks like its already on its way out. Luckily I caught it when i did. It's on a b16 in a DA, and it has a slight rip/tear in it. It wasn't a cheap junk one either.

I installed it in March, and had my car parked by September when I went off to college. Since then I've come home on the weekends and started it up and let it run for a while, just to make sure everything stayed in order. It has been really cold, so i'm thinking that might have made it crack.

I'll replace it asap.

Any cause for concern?

no, it wasnt a dayco. it doesnt have a brand written on it, i get my parts from my local foreign parts dealer... not sure if they order straight from honda or not.

either way im pissed, im going to see if it had some kind warranty and get a new one free hopefully. even a cheap auto zone one shouldnt crack in less then 1000 miles, so i mustve just got either an old or defected one.

not entirely standard in my opinion for belt damage, i still would double check the case for any free objects and such to be honest

90% of the time timing belts wear out typically with either stretching of the belt over time, which causes teeth skipping, dry rotting which can cause breakage, or physical damage to the notches on the part of the belt that turn the gears, which is also due to age usually. So for that kinda damage to occur, i would be looking for a problem elsewhere to be honest.

the belt is all clear, so idk. i think the cold may have caused it. like i said, it sits in the garage and i start it each week or two. you figure freezing temps and the rubber belt, then all the sudden movement and warmth, then re freezing up, then movement and warmth again... id say that could make it brittle and crack.

if that was true it would have to have been a terrible terrible terrible quality belt, because rubber wont do that lol

well thats pretty much the only explanation, so i mustve got the **** belt out of the batch or it mustve been sitting in a warehouse since 1999.

not the only explanation...do you keep the timing belt covers on??
or did you remove them/cut them out like the cool kids? a small piece of gravel could do that damage...

ahhh, that could be it. the cool kid i got the motor from had them cut off and i never thought anything of it except "why would he do that?".

but, then again, it has been sitting for the last few months. so it couldve been there for a while now

either way, im lucky, and itll be fixed soon. and ill start looking for some covers!

ya while its cool and accessible for timing adjustments on the fly, its really not so cool when some **** gets in there and ****s up your belt, but noone cares about that it seems. why dont they make clear timing covers or boltons like the dsms, woudlnt that just make it easier

Yeah I think its pretty stupid in general, I mean, how many people really need to do "timing adjustments on the fly".
If I really had to i might consider chopping them off, but otherwise i wouldnt need people to see the rubber band that holds my engine together lol.

A lot of people leave them off on straight drag cars. Or some leave it off so it's more of an easier access for tuners to adjust cam gears at the dyno.

But a dd is a must.

That damage looks like something was trapped between the belt and one of the gears, you need to get covers for the belt asap.
