picked up my H22A today...confused
ok i got the motor today, but i need a little clarification. the date stamp says 97, but it is obd1 based on dizzy plug etc. It had an auto P0F ecu which means it was from an accord sir. should i be worried about anything since the date stamp is 97 but it appears to be obd1?
i might have answered my own question. apparently the accord sir used and obd1 h22a thru 1997. Since the map was moved on top of the throttle body it appears this will be an easier swap. so i've got a 97 jdm motor that is still obd1..nice. one other question, which distributor cap and rotor do i need to use with this setup since it has an internal coil?
I thought OBD1 lasted only til 96 in Japan? Then '97+ it is for OBD2 cause the H22A Type S with ATTS is also in that '97+ year.
Mine's a '96 and is a OBD1 cause everything plugs right into my OBD1 engine harness.

yeah i was under the same impression... i came to find out that in japan this "law" didnt apply to the accord sir until the 98 version. I am dumbfounded as well. it makes no sense to me. i am not a noob by any means, but am surprised to be finding this out now. i have a 97 jdm accord sir engine in my garage right now and its obd1 from the factory. guess im just lucky? cant believe this is the first time this has come up?

Could it be becuase of some sort of import waiting period? I mean why aren't there more OBD2 JDM H22's on the market? Most of the JDM engines you see people buying are at least 15-16 years old. That would make this the first year for 97 engines.......
that's a good question, most importers have the obd1 versions. I'm starting to think maybe our jdm counter parts didn't switch to obd2 for a while after our 96 deadline? like i said though i'm just shocked that i haven't seen this before, cause apparently every jdm accord sir was obd1 thru 97. so that means you've got H22A's out there that could be obd1 or 2 just depending on what car they came out of....prelude or accord

Yeah that same thing happened here in North America with the OBD1 Accord. It switched to OBD1 2 years before the rest of the North American Honda's did. As far as the OBD jump in Japan, I think you are correct. They didn't have the same deadline as Euro or NA. AFAIK The 97 Prelude in japan was still OBD1 as well. I think they were a year behind. Only in Europe and NA was the H22 switched to OBD2 for the 96+. I could be wrong....it wouldn't be the first time.....
it wouldn't be cost-efficient for Honda to make obd1 cars for jdm 96 and 97 cars and obd2 cars for the us market. is it possible this car was simply converted to obd1, we dont know where the OP got this engine from. it could even be a 98.
honda already had the setup to produce/manufacture OBD1 engines/harnesses so if they did indeed have to shift to OBD2 earlier in the US, I think it would have actually cost them less to leave one production line alone for the time beaing and only change practice in one country, then when necessary change practice in the other country... it wasnt like they redesigned 2 different systems at the same time for 2 different countries. I know that hondas in the US are not alwasy US built, which would crap on my theory. is there any chance that hondas for the 96 model year were never imported from japan since we went to OBD2 and they didnt? then when both places had the same cars, they started importing again? (only had one 96 honda before and didnt bother to check where it was built)
My 96 Accord was built in Marysville, Ohio and it's engine was built in Anna, Ohio. The Ohio plants have been producing Honda vehicles since 1982 and complete I4 and V6 engines since 1985.
Yes there was an Accord Type R produced with an H22. If he lives in the USA it is very unlikely that he owns a true Accord Type R. They were never sold in North America. The Accord SiR (CD6) H22A is now of the vintage that it can be imported into some countries. Is your homies car right hand drive?
ohhh okay ...well im asking cuz u kno theres difrent cap colors for them and im not sure but heard there supposed to mean they type and his is the blue cap so?.
na it aint its left...i dont think its the type are but he asked me to check.....cuz its an h22a1 so to me that dont sound like a type r

The Accord Type R H22A7 has a red top (H22 Type S). The F20B DOHC VTEC and the H23A DOHC VTEC both have blue tops. The USDM H22A1 usually came with a black top. I would imagine that it has probably been painted or swapped with an F20B/H23A1 Valve cover.
