Default Question: VTEC's

Hi i just purchased a 1998 Honda Prelude Base Model. The engine specs are 2.2 engine with DOHC VTEC (automatic).

My question is how do you drive an automatic VTEC engine? Do you just drive it normally and the VTEC engages itself? Or do you need to floor the gas to get the maximium VTEC engagement on the engine.

And if your rpm is not high enough..does that mean the VTEC doesn't engage?

THANKS ahead of TIME if you have an ANSWER for me..

VTEC is NOT nitrous.
VTEC is NOT turbo/super charging.
VTEC is NOT VTECH.

Lol.

VTEC engages at 5.2K RPM for stock engagement. There's certain criteria that must be met in order for VTEC to work:

-Oil Pressure has to be in spec.
-Engine has to be normal operating temp.
-And you have to reach certain RPM(5.2K on factory H22s) depending if it's stock or set to from the tuner who dyno & tunes your vehicle.

Thanks a lot that helps. So i will just drive it normally and the VTEC will engage itself?

Yes it engages by "itself"....Unless you have it hooked up to a swith to "manually" engage it lol

It will continue to engage by itself until the transmission dies, which will be soon. And your Nikes don't have VTEC, so it will suck.

V-tec refers to a system that is part of your motor. It changes how your valves lift and close to allow more air/gas mixture into the motor on the intake stroke and more exhaust gasses out on the expulsion stroke, and the system is set to change that because these settings are more or less efficiant in different rpm ranges. So, using a system like that allows you to use some settings in the lower rpm range that are not as optimal for the higher rpm and the same for the higer rpm range.

Si refers to a model of civic. So, a Si civic could have a motor that includes a V-tec system (all si's do in some form) but a civic dx or ex might not.

An H22A4 will dust an EP3 Si(160bhp K20A3) IMO cause those EP3 are slow as hell and the shifter on those are higher up on the center consol which is a weird design from Honda.

Well considering that the 2001 Honda Prelude is a 2.2 engine VTEC, i would assume it's faster than any Honda Civic Si's ever made.

I think the si is only 1.8 engine?

VTEC just engages once the car reaches a certain RPM, is up to temp and going at least a certain forward speed or faster iirc. For example, you can't hit VTEC in reverse.

Now, I had to look up some of the following because I wasn't sure of the times or the Prelude specs. Anyway, this is what I found out:

The 5th gen Prelude Base model with an automatic transmission came with the H22A4, a 2.2L DOHC VTEC engine with 197hp and 156lb-ft. 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds. I don't know about the automatic, but the manual transmission versions ran a 15.2 second quarter mile. The automatic would likely run a slower quarter mile time.

Now for those Civic Si models:

The '99-'00 Civic Si (EM1) came with the B16A2, a 1.6L DOHC VTEC engine with 160hp and 111lb-ft. 0-60mph in 7.2 seconds and a 15.5 second quarter mile.

The '02-'05 Civic Si (EP3) came with a K20A3, a 2.0L DOHC iVTEC engine with 160hp and 132lb-ft. 0-60mph in 7.6 seconds and a 15.8 second quarter mile.

The '06+ Civic Si (FG2/FA5) comes with a K20Z3, a 2.0L DOHC iVTEC engine with 197hp and 139lb-ft. 0-60mph in 6.7 to 6.3 seconds and a 14.7 second quarter mile

Well, don't forget the Civic Si K20Z3. Those are the faster Si's. If you don't have any mods to back it up, you'll loose cause those 97-01 Preludes are heavier.

And no, There's not one Si that came with a 1.8L from factory. The 99-00 Si came with a 1.6L while the 03 Si and newer ones are all 2.0L(K-Series).
