A D-series trans is supposed to take 1.8-1.9 quarts, while a B-series trans takes 2.2-2.3 quarts. If you can't remove the fill plug to check the level, you want to err on the side of overfilling it, because underfilling it will kill the mainshaft bearings.

Use Honda manual transmission fluid or a comparable lightweight synchromesh manual trans oil. DO NOT use standard gear oil.

Fill it up where the reverse switch is. Hell of a lot easier.

The manual was written back in the days of SF and SG engine oil, which contained a healthy dose of ZDDP (1200-1300ppm) as an anti-wear and extreme pressure additive. Modern SM engine oil contains much lower levels of phosphorus (less than 600ppm) for preservation of emissions equipment, but this results in poor shift quality when used in a Honda transmission. Honda's current MTF formula (~2006 and newer) is a light 0W-20 equivalent and has a high ZDDP content (around 1500ppm) among other modifiers to improve shift feel. Standard gear oil uses a lot of sulfur and/or boron, which can sometimes cause problems with the brass synchros and some of the bearings in the trans; Honda MTF has no sulfur and no boron at all.

Cliffs: Engine oil results in clunky shifts. Honda MTF shifts much smoother.
