Icon5 '94 motor fan + leaking + speedometer problems

1) I have a 1994 Honda Accord EX and the radiator fan doesn't come on far a while and when it does it just keeps running long after I turn off the car. The sound is very loud and when I got home after parking I took a look under the hood and seen just the passenger fan working. My car is not overheating though. What could be the problem?

2) My car is also leaking (not too much though), but it appears only after the car has been running for a while...say after 20-30 min. I have to check my car every 3 hours for the fluids (water, coolant) because if I don't I'm either too low or completely out. Sooo not normal. What could problem number 2 be? My dad thinks a heater hose.

3) Lastly, my speedometer hasn't worked properly for about a year now, but it works from time to time especially when on the freeway going well above the speed limit.

Thank you for taking the time to read my first post. All of your thoughts are welcomed. I'm a struggling college student and while it's a blast to go shopping; it's never fun to spend money on car parts....always so expensive breaking the bank.

I assumed 4-dr auto tranny. If yours isn't, check here for the specific model: http://www.hondapartscheap.com/southbay/jsp/home.jsp They're almost always cheaper than the local dealer.

1. Sounds like the ECT (Engine Coolant Temp sensor). #19: http://www.hondapartscheap.com/south...t=0&quantity=0 Or a sticking temp switch- #18 but, it's probably the sensor.

2. After driving, park it and look for the leak. Look over the radiator, hoses (be sure to check the smaller aux hoses too), thermostat housing (where the hoses go into the block). If it's one of those parts replace that part. Although it's not overheating, check between the block and heads for a leak from the headgasket.

If no leaks found:

A. Pressure test the cooling system with one of these: http://www.google.com/search?q=radia...e0e008a607e93d They're expensive so, go rent one from the autoparts store.

B. Fill up the radiator, turn the car on and look for bubbles in the coolant. If there are, get confirmation from a mechanic for headgasket failure. You can also use one of these to confirm exhaust gases in the coolant: http://www.autotips101.com/cms/autom...ck-testing.htm (Also rented by some autoparts stores)

C. Look for milky oil- also a sign of a blown headgasket.

3. Usually it's the speedo itself: http://www.hondapartscheap.com/south...t=0&quantity=0 or the speed sensor (It's that unlabeled piece that sits on #1): http://www.hondapartscheap.com/south...t=0&quantity=0

Cheapest way to replace the speedo is to buy the whole cluster used and either switch the cluster or switch just the speedo. Check local CL, ebay and http://www.car-part.com/. They have the speed sensor here starting around $50: http://www.rockauto.com/

I would think #1 and #2 are related. I'd start with finding the leak...hoses (yes there are a bunch of them)-rad-wp weep hole-ect. Once that is found and repaired/replaced make sure you bleed the air out of the system when refilling the coolant. Then see if #1 goes away. Fan running after car is off is due to the sensor (#18 in the above) detecting a temp above the preset (223~224? can remember). It will run the fan until either a preset time is reached or the temp falls below the preset.

^^ I agree that #1 and # 2 are probably related. Find the leak first.

#3 is probably the speedometer. On back of the speedometer gauge is a separate circuit board, some people try to re-solder some of the points or just replaced the circuit board on back of the speedometer, that way you can keep the same odometer reading. I will try to find one of the threads showing the pictures. -- No check engine light, right?

Here is a thread showing the separate speedometer circuit board.

Thank you so much for your replies in a timely fashion. It is greatly appreciated.

Just wanted to clarify above I had mentioned that I need to put in fluids every 3 hours when in fact I meant to say every 3 days. Also, majority of you say I need to replay the temperature sensor for the fans, but since 1 fan isn't working does that mean that I need to replace that 1 if not both since the one that does work is very loud and noisy (doesn't that mean it's going to terminate soon)?

From what you stated so far, there is no indication a temperature sensor/switch needs to be replaced. We would need to know a little more what is happening.

Turn on the A/C, does both fans run?

A fan can be quite loud; but, without us actually hearing it or seeing the movement of the fan, we can't be sure the fan motor is bad yet, or that the fan blade may not be properly fasten or damaged. Can you describe the sound and if there is any unusual movement in the fan when it is spinning; or better yet record a video with sound and post it?

Hang on before replacing any switches. I wasn't clear enough in my post. One fan running after car is off is normal, if it is hot...I only mentioned switch #18 as the one that controls that funtion......sorry for not being clear on that.

Redbull-1 has you on your way.

1. It could be the ECT, Fuse, Relay, wiring, or the load(motor). Luckily, mine was only a blown fuse.

2. I'd inspect the heater hose, water pump if it leaks on the driverside timing belt area, upper and lower radiator hoses, and the radiator itself.

3. It might be your VSS. I'd unplug it, use a test light and see if there's power and ground coming to it. Then check the signal wire and also OHM check the sensor if there's continuity.

In the driver side under dash fuse relay box. btw: Normally, you should start a new thread for something different.

If you need help diagnosing/repairing your speedometer PC board let me know. I can repair your PC board with quick turn around time and good pricing. I'm a Honda/Acura service tech in NC full time and repair electronics in my spare time. It's very common on1994-1997 Accord models for the speedometer to become erratic and sometimes stick at a certain speed (more than likely 18-20mph). Let me know if I can help. Blessings.
