Default Comptech aluminum flywheel

After much research into flywheels I have decided to go with the Comptech aluminum as it's very light at 7 lbs. and Comptech plus most everyone else assures it's very strong. There is a camp that seems to keep siding with "aluminum flywheels will shatter and kill you" that I'd like to look at though. Looking at the differences, isn't aluminum more malleable than steel and if a flywheel were to actually shatter, it would be the steel one? Has there ever been a case of a flywheel actually shattering because I have never heard of one on an Integra? Are most of you still running scattershields with lightweight flywheels?

I've never actually heard first hand of anyone shattering a flywheel. I run the Comptech FW, and do not use a scatter shield.

i would guess the comptech one would shatter, but in some sort other ways, i kinda wouldnt, because its built aluminum i think can withstand more..if im not wrong..

Steel is actually more malable. That is why Aluminum Mtn Bike frames crack easier and are stuffer rides.

i would really get a scatter shield installed. cant be THAT expensive is it? for a piece of metal that rotates at 8000+ rpms ...

i;'d be more worried about it warping first

I agree. Be done with the what if and cover your buns for the worst case. Alot of racing bodies require these if you are too fast.

The only flywheels I have heard of coming apart were badly designed flywheels...I have never seen, or heard of the brand of which supposedly shattered.

You will not experience any problems with a well designed Al flywheel...I think that there are 5 threads that have argued this point in the last 2 months.

This subject of flywheels is kinda getting beaten to death......
An Al flywheel is going to be perfectly safe for the street, or the track.

and see the sig

Yeah I found tons of threads on the whole aluminum vs chromoly debate and most who knew what they were talking about explained aluminum is just as good as chromoly as far as longevity is concerned. Mainly I wanted to know where the whole aluminum flywheel breakage issue came from, since alot of people still seem to have it in their heads from somewhere.

I seriously wouldn't worry about it.

Aluminum is debatably better since they all have a replacable face. It is possible fuq up the friction surface beyond machining. If you have a chromoly, you are out one pricey fly. An Al fly need the face replaced only. That costs about 50-60 bucks.
