Default Honda Accord 1997 Special Edition 2.2L 4-cyl. Check Engine Code P0441

I have a
1997 Honda Accord Special Edition 2.2L 4-cyl. Automatic and two nights ago i was driving home from where ever I was at and the Check Engine light came on. The next day which was friday I took my car to AAMCO to find out what the code was. They told me that the cold was P0441 (P0441 Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow).

So i took the car back home and did some reading on this site and a few others and heard it could be the gas cap.

How do I know if the gas cap is bad or just loose?

I thought maybe its just loose and not broken so i just tightened it up nice and tight til i heard a bunch of clicking.

After I did that i reset the Check engine and light and didn't drive the car for around 14 Hours. When I finally decided to drive it the light didn't go on at all so i figured it was fixed. I only drove for maybe 10min came home and then went back out and filled my gas tank up full. It was on half but now its on full. After filling it up i drove about 30 min away parked my car and then came back to it around 10 Hours later. I turned the car on drove it for 1 min and the light came back on.

So im wondering if it is the gas cap how do i know if its bad or just loose. I fixed the loose problem by tightening it but maybe it was broken some how? Whenever i untwist the gas/Fuel cap i hear a loud hissing noise.

Should I buy a new gas cap and see if that fixes it or just find some where to get it fixed??

If i need to get it fixed what parts do i need and can it be done myself?

If it cant be done by myself what kind of price am i looking at to get this thing fixed?

Sorry for so many questions i just really need to get this thing fixed but at the cheapest possible way. Im a broke college student so money is really tight right now.

Any help would be really really greatly appreciated

Thanks

Lol evap can be caused by a loose gas cap but I highly doubt that this is your problem.

Try to see if the hose fell off of the evap canister. I was getting an evap code and that was the problem.

The evap canister is located under the intake, behind the transmission, and to the right of the fuse box. It should be attached to the firewall on the passenger side and its bottom rests on the rear subframe. Its a black cylinder about 4" in width and 8" in height. It should have hose on top and a hose down bottom.

Depending on the mileage you have on the car, you might be able to get it fixed for no charge by Honda under the extended emission warranty of 14 year/150,000 miles. See TSB:

Also it has been proven and I have attempted this myself on several cars, if you fill up your tank while the engine is running your light will turn on you would have to reset it to turn it off. Did you fill your tank with the car on?

I didnt fill it up with the car on. I think that would be pretty stupid if someone actually does that.

Miles i have a lot 218,000

I checked right now to see if any loose tubes and what not attached to the canister and seemed nice and tight there

what else can i check?

Have you considered the Service Manual?

It's like the owner's manual, except for service. It contains the how-to instructions on fixing nearly every problem with your car. Yes, it is specific to YOUR car. Sorta like a Haynes or Chilton's manual, only way better.

You get them directly from the author/publisher company:
