I have 2000 miles on my engine and there's no wear yet. I'm wondering if these springs make the valve train wear quicker. Anyone who's had these springs for a while please chip in, I just want to know what to expect and when to expect it.

Are you saying you have valve springs with 100 lbs seat pressure? what are they rated at off the seat?

 

It has a lot to do with the oil you are running. What do you run?

 

That level of seat pressure can pound out the valve seats a little faster and are completely overkill on stock cams. I wouldn't run anything more than 70lbs of spring pressure on the seat, or less personally.

 

I read alot of info on this a few years ago and the range that was most common was anything above 90 lbs was going to cause much more wear and will need to check and replace parts more often.The recommended seat pressure was 80 lbs and lower for a mildly built head.

 

I subscribe to the "use the least amount of spring pressure required to control valve motion, that works with the cams you're running" philosophy.

I've been using TORCO race oil , it supposedly has a lot of Zinc. I'll keep using it but I might try some diesel oil if I can find the right weight.

The reason I installed those springs is because I had 80lbs in there, but the engine ended up making 700+whp at 8600rpm on the dyno and it's tuned to rev to 9800rpm. 2step is set at 7850rpm and I shift at 9500rpm at the track. That's the reason I chose those ,however I'm having second thoughts now since I hardly ever run it on high boost anymore.

I run the RM SL light valvesprings which only have 55lbs seat pressure 186lbs at .820" lift and a coil bind @ .740". They would easily handle the power, RPM and cams you're running now with a lot less wear and tear on the valvetrain. Skunk 2 tuner series springs would have been a good choice as well. I run the S2 pro2 cams at the moment, up to 9000RPM no problem.

Lots of people use Supertech springs and I've never heard anything bad about them. They have a lower seat pressure than the Crower springs I was going to use, and less than Skunk2.

 

There are two different types of Supertech valves prings. One type has around 100lbs of seat pressure and the other has around 70lbs if memory serves. Many people ave run springs like this for a while but their cams required it. Running heavy springs on more or less stock cams is overkill and can accelerate valvetrain/valve seat wear.

 

^ Yeah alot of people don't understand that these aren't the regular 70lb or 80lb supertechs. That's why I'm trying to find some people that have had these springs in for a while (+10k-15k miles). So far the lobes are not squaring or showing any signs of wear at all; same thing with the rocker arms and retainers.

I'm going to use the German castrol 0w-30 oil pretty soon. I was just told to use oil with lots of zinc to help with the wear on the valvetrain but the torco race oil gets real expensive.

I have been running them in my motor and I just rebuilt the head and it was flawless inside but if I remember correctly my springs had about 80 lbs seat pressure I think its been a while since i put them in.

 

i run the 85 pound supertechs with itr cams, 8900 limiter making less power though, only low to mid 400's. i dont have any issues with wear. just took a look the other day actually it all looks same as when i built the motor a few thousand miles ago
