So 01-0001 recently died on me while I was driving home. I was doing about 10mph on my street and the car shut off. I attempted to restart it but it made a wierd noise and shut off immediately.
I pushed the car home and finally took the VC off hoping it may have skipped timing or something but nope:
Here is the damage on cyl 2 - I can wiggle the spring w/ my finger. I"m guess that I dropped a valve? Hoping the damage is not super serious but I'll find out when I get the head taken off.

This motor was a built ls-vtec setup that maybe has about 5/6k on it - thought it would have lasted longer, especially since I only had 1 track day and rarely beat on it. My buddy did own the setup before so I'm not sure how much it was beat on prior to me getting it.
Debating on a k-swap or having my spare ITR long block rebuilt and put in the car.
Can't wait to get it figured out so I can track it again - but on a side note, this incident makes me want to drive it really hard next time since I babied it and this happened.

looks like a broken valve spring. the keeper is still in the retainer so the valve didn't drop, look around that spring, chances are it broke somewhere. if you're lucky and no real piston to valve damage took place you just install another spring and go. those are aftermarket retainers so i'm guessing the same with springs
compression check with the new spring. if it checks go drive it
compression check with the new spring. if it checks go drive it
Usually there is no piston contact due that the valve is not fully opening. You can change the spring with the head on with the right tools. Done it multiple times. Remove the cams. You will need a magnet for the keepers and the piston on TDC on the compression stroke. An air hose with a manaul control valve to charge the cylinder holding the valve up when the spring is removed and installing the new one. Then when done do a compression test and you shouldnt have any other issues.

It looks like a piece of the valve train broke off and probably fell in the cyclinder. Lemme know what you the deal is when you pull it apart.
Time to go K !!!!!!!!!!!!

I disagree with everyone...see if you can pick up the retainer. Your valve might have broken..hence why the keepers are still in the retainer as is a visible piece of your valve, yet you can move it around. You can move it around because the valve is probably broken above the valve guide. Let me know when you find.

I'll probably take the head off the see what the damage might have been.
I'm hoping it isn't too bad but thanks for the input.

It was just for a day or 2 - I threw the ce28s back on -
Hopefully it clears up this weekend and I get it all taken apart- 3 day weekend ftw!

So I looked around in the head and look what I found - ferrea vs broke like u guys suggested above. What is the possibility of damage to the block if any?
broken valve spring
psssh
called it
anyway block near zero risk
valve is another story. what you do is install another spring and leak down test the cylinder. if it has more leak than other other 3 you have to pull the head and replace the valve. you may be okay though which is why it's worth testing. pull the cam. install a spring, leak down test and go from there you could probably even rig up an air hose to the cylinder for a pressure test. make sure both valves are closed and pressurize it. you'll hear hissing if you bent a valve

Ouch... sorry about the motor but I had the same thing happen to me in my gsr. One my valves Broke too and my piston can and hit it. I had to get new piston and valves. Lucky it didn't damage the head and hopefully not your too but I know some machine shop can fix that too. That means more $$$ but for you money ain't no thing right??? Haha GL BRO.
HOWTO: Remove head and inspect valvetrain and pistons for damage
Step 1: Remove cylinder head
Step 2: OK now that we've removed cylinder head, look around for damage
Back after these messages.
