Default egr ports...

I am having a recurring problem with the egr ports being clogged. 2001 prelude factory Intake manifold basic bolt ons first cleaning was done at 100k because of code. I did this cleaning myself. Code came back at 115k and I took it to dealership to have it cleaned. Code came back at 130k dealership is telling me that i have to pay to have it cleaned again. What would make this keep coming back so swiftly. The motor does burn oil, not enough to warrant the valve stem seals replaced yet though, maybe .25 of a quart every 700 miles and only does it after vtec. Any help would be appreciated

Sorry, I don't have an answer for you, just a couple of related questions:

1) Did you have a CEL that said you have clogged egr ports?

2) What were the symptoms of there being a problem?

3) How did you clean the ports?

Thanks for your time.

1.)yes
2.)rougher idling, hesitation after full stops and driving away under normal driving, felt sluggish over all and dumped more smoke at vtec,

Sounds to me like the egr valve is being stuck open. Check the seat of the valve. you can take it out and put some water on top of the valve to see if its stuck slightly open or not, depending on if the water leaks out or stays on top of the valve seat.

ill try that but i suspect that the valve is fine because i replaced it when i did the first cleaning. does anyone know of a cleaner that is stronger than the mopar stuff that i could possibly just pour in the egr whole and rev it up?

Are you getting a P0401, or a P1491?

P0401 cleaned them again and seems fine now. Im just waiting for it to trip again. I would love to be able to keep this from happening every 8000 miles or so.

Are you drilling out the six EGR channel plugs in the manifold and cleaning it out as per Honda's procedure here, or are you just cleaning the two ports for the EGR valve? Is your PCV system working properly?

If you're cleaning it properly, all I can tell you is to beat on the car more often. A prescription of WOT and VTEC on a regular basis helps keep things cleared out.

Make sure you have good vacuum to the EGR solenoid. Buy a new EGR? I know those EGR ports on my H-deucedeuce are rediculously small. I think I'll drill mine before I put it back together. Those EGR's may rob a bit of power, but they are friendly to your exhaust valves.

If he's getting a P0401 (insufficient flow), the EGR valve itself is usually okay. It generally only needs to be replaced if it's throwing a P1491 (insufficient valve lift).

you cant just pour somethin in the egr and rev it up. you have to manually remove it and carb cleaner is the best for the job. but before u remove it unplug the vaccume hose and hook a vaccume pump directly to the egr valve and apply 8in-hg of vaccume. the engine should die. if it just spudders but doesnt die the the ports are definetly cloged and needs cleaning

try better gas with treatment every now and again and also u might try running a higher temp thermostat so your car will run just a little hotter and burn off more of the build up

A higher temperature thermostat won't make the engine "run hotter"; it will just cause cooling system problems.

The best advice I can give to anybody is to never mess with the OE thermostat in a Honda car.
