Default Quick spool and turbo questions (Stock b18c1)

I am currently redoing a turbo set up and will be running a stock b18c1 with an inline pro cast manifold and 5 bolt downpipe. I am willing to spend around $600 on a turbo and would like to know what is going to be able to support 325-425 whp but still spool before 4000 rpm, 4500 the latest..

what is the spool like on a garret 57trim with a .63 exhaust, as ive been looking into them. Also what would some good precision turbos be that will achieve my spool and power goals? any other turbo suggestions welcome as long as they are within reason of my goals and budget.

The 57 trim .63 is a very ideal turbo for the lower to mid end of the goal you suggested, but it will be pushed to "near" the high end of its efficiency range at 425 whp, especially if you're running unleaded pump gas, where detonation & knock will be less forgiving, tuning wise, as opposed to E85 or race fuel. Not saying it can't be done, but if you want to stay out of that particular range of that goal, it's a really good choice. I ran a 57 trim .63 Precision (SC-3431) on my LS, and it spooled before 4k RPM, but it didn't reach maximum pressure (FULL spool) until 4k RPM. Me, I would keep it around that 325 whp mark anyway, being that your B18C is bone stock, unless you're planning on running something other than 93 octane pump gas.

I'd say roll with it, you can't beat it for the price & performance for a stock motor.

totally agree! so many people act as if a stock bottom end isn't enough for a street car but I think thats about the perfect power level in a light car.

yeah i also agree with this. a lil while back my friend bought a peakboost kit with the 57 trim .63 exhaust for his stock 135k mile gsr. the car made exactly 300hp on 8.5 psi. spool was not laggy at all, especially with the gsr tranny. i think it made full boost of 8-9 psi right around 4000 rpm give or take like 200 rpm for what gear you are in. it was very nice to drive around in. it was just under the power of really running into traction problems on street tires but was still able to go 13.0@110 at the track in a 97 gsr

the car currently has 105k on it and has had all major services, i plan on keeping it around 325 on pump gas, maybe 350+ on e85 with some headstuds.... I was going to pick of one of these precision turbos, which one is similar to the garret 57trim with .63 exhaust

I had one as well. Stock GSR w/ a revhard kit. Made 275whp @ 10psi w/ 2.5" exhaust and cat.

Really liked that turbo

Yeah I'm running one on my bone stock ls using a blox manifold. Spool is good right around 4g is full boost. At 12psi I'm making 265whp/245tq
Plan on using the same setup on my built gsr with itr cams. I'm hoping to make real close to 400whp. I'm still tossing up the idea of a different manifold. Either the inline pro or mini ram from turbo elements.

Wanted to add that I used an old school ceramic ball bearing version of this exact turbo. I used a RevHard manifold which I think is the exact same design as Inline Pro. I was at target boost of 15psi by 3500RPM. I used that turbo for a good 7-8 years.

I don't the revhard is the same. It's a cast log style but the inline pro kinda is just by itself.

What's the difference between a Turbonetics T3/T04E with 57 trim compressor and .63 AR exhaust and stage 5 wheel and a regular Garrett with the same specs? Or is this what a Turbonetics, Precision, etc is, just a cleverly devised matching of parts? Is anything ported out, specially balanced, whatever?

i think precision uses garrett turbos and clean them up to their specs, use their own housings, etc. i believe turbonetics developed their own turbo designs, same for borg warner.

No. Precision uses their own turbine wheels/ cartridges from HP technologies, and design their own billet compressor wheels, and housings. They do not have a contract with Garrett. Turbonetics developed similar Garrett-based designs until about 2007, in which now they have a few more of their own designs (but only in the much larger sizes that Honda guys won't be using, really). Borg-Warner do have their own design compressor and exhaust wheels, but they are slightly dated (except for the newer EGR series).
