Default Why is there a hole in this transmission?

Also, should this d-series transmission be shipped on a pallet or is there a way to properly package this thing and still ship via Fedex ground/UPS ground?

There is no "gear" pictured. The open hole in the upper center of the photo is for the starter. The hole in the lower right side of the photo is where the left axle is inserted into the differential.

It doesn't attach to the flywheel. There is no flywheel in the photo. The VSS enters the transmission case and is driven by a gear pressed onto or machined into the differential housing.

when I was talking about the part where the axle goes, I thought he said that's where the VSS comes out of or something like that. I'm not that familiar with FWD transmissions which is why I hadn't even considered where the axle for the left wheel would go in this setup.. Thanks for the clarification.. Now onto the next issue which is, how is this transmission going to be shipped? How does one ship a transmission in a box? Peanuts? Bubble wrap?

Drain transmission, strap to small wooden pallet, wrap with shipping plastic. This is what most automotive salvage yards do.

Or, drain transmission, wrap with shipping plastic, and pack into sturdy double-walled cardboard box with foam-in-place blocks or layered corrugated blocks. This is what some transmission rebuilding services do.
