Is B18C5 Supposed to Burn Oil in VTEC???
Hey Everyone,
I have a 2000 Yellow ITR with a brand new motor (from warranty) that's only about 1/2 year old. Today when driving in front of a friend, he noticed the some black smoke when VTEC enganged. I've heard that VTEC causes oil to burn. Is this true, and if so, how much is typical?
Thanks for helping a newbie.

The Acura RETARDS told me that 1 quart every 1000 miles is OK.
fuggin incompetant morons... ill never trust them to even change the oil (which they have screwed up so many)

Tell you the truth, burning oil is usually indicated by bluish/white smoke from the exhaust and it tends to float in the air for a while. Black is more of running rich than burning oil.

I don't think it's much, but you can apparently see it when VTEC kicks in. Thanks.
Hell I know of an R that burns 1 qt every 250-350 miles without vtec and it runs fine
But most likely your car is just running rich.
I know it burns some because I have to top it up once in a while, but I just didn't think that you would be able to see anything coming out of the tailpipe.
I'm only used to seeing black smoke coming out of my boosted Corolla...I always run my SDS programmable ECU a little rich during high boost just in case....

4 stroke motors shouldnt burn any amount of serious oil. Just a very very small amount. Certainly not 1 quart every 1000 miles

I honestly would NOT be concerned with that kind of oil usage, maybe it SHOULDN'T burn it, but I wouldn't care if it did.
Stupid me, what am I talking about (having a Monday moment). Of course black smoke means running rich. But the car is definately consuming oil.
Here's another tidbit of info I found on vtec.net:

You should also check your O2 sensors. While the ECU should identify problems, its possible something isn't working right. An overly rich misture will also cause black smoke and carbon buildup. Additionally, most Hondas run rich at high rpm under WOT and this will show up as some balck smoke (light amounts) near the rev limiter.
Some of us S2000 owners have noticed that synthetic oil cauxses reduced gas mileage and an increase in carbon buildup on the tail pipes. We're continuing to study the issue and will publish a report soon, but if you're using synthetic, you might try changing back to regular oil.
Finally, get a compression and leakdown test run. If your rings or valves are haivng problems sealing, this will show it.

I put in full synthetic Quaker State. What kind of oil do you recommend for the C5?
I wonder how many of these B18's burning oil are regularly warmed up and cooled down? I got harassed for treating #9 like a turbo car, but that bitch never burned a drop in 26k miles, 10k of those miles with Spec B's. Mobil 1 since the first change.
Just a thought.

Pat: I never do that with mine, and it doesn't burn a drop... Oh I did get that "no oil in the filter" thing the other day though that you had on your roommates car.. but i'm not 100% sure it didn't just drain.. I was being lazy (go figure) so it was draining awhile..
my car has never burn oil, and let me tell you I don't baby it either. I don't BEAT the hell out of her either but I do drive it like an R is supposed to be driven
My ITR burns oil like there's no tommorow. Most people that I know (and I know a hell of a lot) that have ITRs loose a lot of oil during "spirited" driving.
