Default Is this a 98+ or a pre-98 JDM ITR?

Guys,
I just picked up a full swap from a JDM ITR:

Video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nd2bLEgRYh0

How can I tell whether or not the car was a 98+ or a pre-98?

If it helps at all, the steering wheel was MOMO without airbag.

Thanks for your help,

-Walter

Google is your friend. There are several ways to tell a 96 spec from a 98 spec.

on the head, right above the header/exhaust manifold, ther are some numbers stamped and they tell you the year that the motor was made. usually the numbers are just two(2) numbers with a line between them and they have a circle around the both numbers.

Looks like a 96 spec. Your video title says pulling a b18c5. It should say b18c sense thats the jdm motor code.

96 spec, you answered your own question with the airbag comment

Another way to tell would be the blue vin tag under the hood

Very true. Sorry but I thought it was a 98+ and it dawned on me only earlier today it might have been a pre-98 so I got a bit anxious.

Indeed Sir. I wonder whether it's the looks of it or the "sounds" that revealed this to you.

Thanks, I'll check that soon. Right now the engine is all wrapped ready for a long drive.

Hehe. It's as legit as they get. Got the block ID on the receipt and everything.

I am a bit disappointed it's a pre-98. I was hoping it was a 98+. Now I need to find out the exact differences between the two years. Oh well.

Thanks again for the help guys.

lack of airbag means nothing.

Correct. I've been reading up on this and learnt that pre-98 airbags were optional while 98+ were standard.

airbags were optional in 98+ as well. here is an example of a non-SRS equipped 98+ spec.

Not disagreeing with you but its so easy to swap a steering wheel. So based just upon that itr for sale nada is determined.

i've been told that the 96spec motor is very good even though it has like 5 less HP.

for all comparisons, look no further than

http://www.integratyper.org/specs/master_comparison.htm

good site, great info.

Airbags might have been optional 98+, but I'm 99% sure they WEREN'T an option in 96/97. Prove me wrong, I love to learn.

i didnt say anything about 96/97 though; that i don't know. i was merely referring to 98+ being an option.

Ah ok. So having an airbag means it IS 98+, but not having one doesn't necessarily mean 96 spec. Never knew that, thanks for the info.

Ok, well airbags were an option in all years of the DB8 ITR 95-01 and were 100% optional in the 98+ DC2's, you could also get your Rx without a supplemental restraint system.. they were much more common in DB8R's than in DC2R's from what I have seen. The DB8's also came equipped with a much different drivers wheel than the DC models when equipped with SRS (looks much like our steering wheels except with H emblem).

And to the OP: they swapped motors in Japan just like we do, especially if there are engine/emission problems so it is worth checking the headstamp. There is also little to no difference in the 98+ motor except for the methods used to assemble/finish the motor and the CTR cam (virtually unnoticeable), they do however have a different transmission and header.

Are you sure the SRS steering wheel was an option on 96/97 DB8 ITRs?

This guy?
