Upon taking off, there is a whine noise coming from the Type R.

It doesn't sound like it is from the motor but rather transmission. It goes away after about 3k rpms - if I"m cruising 50 or so, it goes away.

Car has an aftermarket clutch/flywheel setup .

You can hear it from outside of the car - what could this be?

 

i know my release bearing is causing similar problems..

it sounds like the car is dragging chains around @ lower rpms..

 

You sure its not the intake? Mine wines from 2-4k and its the intake.

 

sounds like a clutch release bearing issue... hish

Is it possible that you're confusing "whining" with a "whir" type of noise. I've seen several ITR's make similar noises caused by worn input shaft bearings. Anyway, this might help narrow it down a bit:

If you're not a woman, get the car moving about 10-15mph in 1st gear, push the clutch pedal all the way in, and kill the ignition letting the car roll with the engine off and trans in gear. Do you still hear the same noise?

 

My vote is for the imput shaft bearing as well. Has it been getting worse?

 

Like what Quick99SI said above....do you hear the noise all the time or only when in gear? If you were to push in the clutch does the noise go away? If its the input shaft it should go away when you depress the clutch.

Otherwise my guess would be wheel bearings.

 

Wheels bearings will usually make more of a pulsating noise like in this video

What final drive is in the tranny?

o.e., ats, mfactory, etc?

 

I think you & 440whpdailydr hit it on the money -

Throw out bearing / input shaft bearing is what I was told by a mechanic -

The noise goes away at idle with my foot pushed down on the clutch pedal.
