Can't get ignition timing set, new cam
D16Z6 with a Comp 59300 camshaft.
I have the distributor retarded as much as possible and I still can't get the spark where it should be, I've got it igniting just before the TDC mark but still a ways from the 3 ignition lines on the crank pulley.
I read people are modifying their distributor to get the ignition timing set, what exactly are they doing? I tried searching but I can't find what I'm looking for.
Secondly, can the ignition timing be helped with an adjustable cam gear so that I wouldn't have to "modify" the distributor? Or are adjustable cam gears just for valve timing?
It keeps throwing a CEL for the CKP at me and I can hear it misfiring along with spark knock. I'm 100% positive the valve timing is correct and I know my CKP sensor is good cause once I put the OEM cam back in, everything is fine again.

If your valve timing is correct, there's no way your distributor would be set like that. Recheck your valve timing and make sure everything lines up including your distributor. I'd say you're off a tooth.
I checked again and it's all fine.
I tried changing the valve timing by 1-2 teeth in each direction and it only made it worse. I swapped back in the OEM cam and marked the timing belt teeth and cam gear so it all lined up exactly the same and I can get the ignition timing dead on with the OEM cam but I just can't with the Comp cam.

Well, here's the thing, I don't know how to go about fixing the CKP thing cause it only flashes a CEL with the Comp cam. The CEL doesn't come on at all for the oem camshaft.
