I'm sure this has been argued about several times but i just want a clear answer. And i dont wanna deal with the little d-bag down at my local honda. im running a b16a in my civic and i was wondering if i put the s2k oil filter on it would it do any damage. bc hamp and oem filters now are below standards, ie: hamp is 12% less then oem in japan something like that, and the new oem filters are part of fram, just named honeywell...and the s2k filter is the only one that is toyo roki, which is same what oem honda filters USED to be. or soemthing along those lines..lol but i just wanna know, would a s2k filter do any damage, it is a daily driver but i do smash on it sometimes..thanks guys oh aand i think i'll be runnin castrol syntec 10w30

 

how is it that in the whole honda lineup an s2k is the only one to keep its standards?

if honda changed to something else theres a good chance they know what they are doing. to complain about the filter qaulity and run castrol syntec is a little weird.

if you can get it to fit(which IIRC it doesn't) no you won't do any damage.

 

theres nothing wrong with using the oem filter designed for your car. honda isnt going to supply an oil filter to the dealerships that has inadiquite(sp) filtering properties for their cars. i work at a dealership and the filters we get are made by honeywell and filtertech. every 2 months or our supply changes from one company to the other.

 

do you know why they changed them and forget the oil

 

i know that oem is best but honda went with fram and wouldnt that just be the same thing as buying an orange fram can from autozone or something. IM JUST WONDERING what is the BEST filter that WILL WORK. s2k? oem d/b/k filter. what?

I doubt you will do any damage to you engine, although I am not sure if you can even use them....
People have used k filters, and it is supposed to bump oil pressure a bit. inline4 say's it does and others, but I can't say for sure if it does.

 

its a myth. honda filters are mostly made by fram so if you trust fram then . go for it. and there are 2 types of s2k filters i dont remeber if its the years from ap1 and ap2 difference or just type. smaller oil filters in theory give you more oil pressure while the larger ones give you more volume? so i hope this helps

 

if you go to honda and simply ask for an oil filter, they wont ask if you have a s2000 or not. atleast i have never been asked.

 

i've been using HAMP oil filters that i import from japan for about 5 years now and have had NO problems at all.

I use my car every day and run it hard sometimes..

it is running 187hp from the B16A so it should be absoluetly fine.

just don't use castrol with it............ thats not what honda used lol.
like chap said above bit weird to be worried if honda standards are ok but then you use castrol.

 

Honda makes 2 oil filters:

The S2000 filter and the one for everything else. There is no K-series filter. I used to work for honda, D, B, F, H, K they're all the same. The S2000 filters are physically larger and come from Filtech. The other filter comes from Fram/Honeywell, although brand new cars come with a Filtech small filter. You can certainly run an S2000 filter, but the smaller "teacup" regular oil filters will give you more oil pressure. So long as the oil pressure light isn't staying on longer than normal when you start the vehicle you shouldn't have any problems running an S2000 filter.

 

Definitely not. It doesn't matter who fabricates it. Honda supplied Fram with a list of requirements/specs, and under contract Fram would have to meet or exceed them. An orange Fram filter can be of completely different quality than a Honda one, regardless if it was made by the same manfacturer. Who knows, Honda may even have their own blueprints for filters which Fram HAS to meet.

That being said, Fram may want more profit off their filters, and therefore may provide lower quality ORANGE filters for the same price. Who knows. There could be a whole lot more behind it than we know.

I sincerely doubt Honda would risk a lot on downgrading the quality of its filters and potential engine life to save a few cents in the process. Honda is known for engine life. I would believe Honda would save a few cents while providing the same quality material though.

Also, I've never personally used Fram filters before, but I do have a few buddies that are cheap as hell and only use them on their Hondas... while changing REGULAR oil every 5500km. They've NEVER had issues. Yes, they enjoy VTEC too. This may not be the best scenario for their engines, and they do burn a bit of oil (not drastic), but their engines also have 330,000km - 400,000km on them.

I think you would risk more using an S2k filter with the aforementioned oil pressure issue, as opposed to using the filter intended by Honda. Even having low pressure for a few seconds everytime you fire your car up would have me worried.

yeah that makes sense just depends what side you choose , with honda and be positive about it or against honda..but ok i'll just buy both since they arent hundreds of dollars anyways, the s2k one and the "other" one lol. i'll give them a shot.. so then what kinda oil do you guys recommend, nothing to pricey. i just got into the honda scene few months ago and none of my buddies have decent hondas ha...but thanks to all the input guys its helpful

 

I run castrol 5w-30 synthetic blend.

 

after seeing what's inside a oem honda filter(not s2k), i'll never use one again. the whole filter element is cardboard. google it, you'll see for your self. personally, i run puralator gold, very good build quality(cotton/paper filter with a metal cage to hold it) .

as for oil, if you want the best run amsoil. i run valvoline synthetic blend/ full synthetic, why, because when ever they do an oil comparison, valvoline is the runner up to amsoil.

First of all the engine oil debate is endless - you ask 10 people about oil, and you'll get 10 different opinions, including viscocity, brand, synthetic or conventional, etc. etc.

Let's talk oil FILTER again for a moment.

First of all the definite answer to "will the S2000 oil filter fit a B16A?"

YES. ABSOLUTELY.

Some of you might not be old enough, or might not have been driving a Honda and/or had to purchase an oil filter prior to the "small" filter being introduced across the model line-up besides the S2000.

The old oil filters that fit all Hondas post 1988 was the exact same size as the current S2000 oil filter so I hardly see how the larger filter is harmful to a non-S2000 engine. Honda had the B series engine spinning up to 8000+rpm back in 1989, and the larger S2000-sized oil filters were just fine until they decided to go with the "small" filter out of the blue some 6-7 years ago.

The old style, larger oil filters had a few different part numbers. I personally have a few of the ancient "PR3" filters at my house that I saved as sort of souvenirs. I recall "POH" for the middle three digits in the old part number too. Honda supersedes part numbers all the time, and sometimes it's due to the manufacturer/supplier changing, while other times it's for no apparent reason.

I'm not sure we'd ever get an actual, "technical" explanation as to why Honda switched to the smaller oil filter with the 15400-PLM-A01 current part number.

I have used the s2k oil filter on my b16 with out problems.

 

Ok so I went to go pick them up and they had the ao1 filters. Also the ao2 ones and the s2k ones. Should I stock up on the ao1 ones or what bc those are the good ones aren't they?
