Default Gratuity etiquette?

Alright, this is a question that I have thought about for a little bit. I need to get my car detailed. The company that I am going through is charging a little over $400 for a complete detail. I told them I wanted my car to look brand new. Now, with that said, what is a basis for tipping? Do you even tip at that price point (I don't tip my mechanic)? Or do you just follow the 15-20% restaurant rule? Any help would be appreciated, I don't want to diss the guys working on my car. Thanks!

Why do you have to tip if you are already paying? Just bring the guy a bigmac to show you care im being for reall.

If they do a good job tip them. Especially if you might use them in the future. If they do a good job my guess is you will. They will remember you if you tip. I would get tipped pretty regularly when I detailed full time. As far as how much that is hard to say. I would be happy with a 20 spot for a 12 pack, but if you are paying 400 I would go 40 if I was satisfied.

As a good gesture , I'd tip if they did a good job. I might not tip $40 since you're already paying $400 but I'd at least do $20.

I figured that I should tip something. You never want to be "that guy" that stiffed the detailer. As said above, especially if you send them work or go back.

You asked them to go above and beyond their normal standard...$40 would be appropriate.

I've thought of this many times detailing, slip a 20 in a hard to see spot with a note saying keep up the good work or something along those lines.

I always Like a tip when I get done. It's just like a little cherry on top. Usually I get $20-$50 on a $300-$500 detail job. but I have gotten $100 tip before. It all depends on the client. if they make $100,000 a year then a $50 tip isn't that much to them, but if its an average person then a $20 tip is perfectly fine.

Sounds good, 20 bucks seems pretty fair for good work.
