96 Civic Starts then stalls
My 1996 Civic will start but then stalls. I replaced the fuel pump because before it wouldn't start at all. If I push the accelerator it will run, but extremey rough, and then die.
Probably at least 50k. The problem started with about 5 miles to go on a 100 mile drive. The car lost power climbing a hill, I pulled off as the engine died. It restarted and drove fine for another mile, stumbled, missed and stalled. It was so similar to previous cars that had fuel pumps go out, that I replaced the pump. The car started, idled for about 3 minutes, started missing and stalled. It would re-start but only with the accelerator depressed. In my experience, plugs, wires and the like, don't suddenly quit, but I'll start with diagnostics on spark and cleaning the recommended IAV etc and see where we are.
Good thought on the fuel filter, I'll do that too. I'll get back into it this weekend and reply when I know more. I don't recall seeing the CEL lit up, but I'll check again. By the way, is 'dizzy' and abreviation for distributor?

If I turn the key on, the CEL comes on for 2 seconds then goes off. I followed the procedure to pull codes and got the same result, on for two seconds then nothing. I replaced the battery a couple weeks ago because it was old and dead, but the car has idled, at least for a few minutes since then. It has not run well enough to drive. I assume I lost the codes when the battery was out and haven't been able to run enough to generate new ones. The fuel pump makes a nice hum when the key is turned, then I turn to start, it catches, runs about 5 seconds and dies.
Next steps, I'll check for spark, replace the fuel filter and verify that the pump is doing more than humming. Any other ideas?

im having the same problem but my car 96 civic isnt making the fuel pump turn on. What i would do is reset the ecu by removing the 7.5A fuse under in the engine bay. It should say backup/stereo i believe. Wait a couple minutes and see if it helps with the problem. Test your main relay as well
