Carbon Synchros, how many miles so far?
Just curious you guys with the newer carbon Lined synchros (gear speed, synchrotech, Mfactory (all the same)) how many miles do you have on them so far and any issues?
I'm in it for the long haul and still on the fence about them b/c need them to last longer then my fresh new motor. Don't want to take the trans out again after 10k miles or so for a rebuild.
thanks

It depends on how often you shift and at what rpm/speed for the input and countershaft those shifts are taking place at.
They can last from one hundred 9500+ rpm shifts to 40,000 miles. It all depends.
Usually, if the engine is built right and not pushing the limits of piston speed, rod/stroke ratio, not over-revved, and run with the correct amount of oil, it will last longer than the transmission's shifting components which always see metal to metal wear, even on 2000 rpm shifts.

Back in 2005, my friend had a local Honda/Acura parts shop that eventually went out of business due to recurring theft rebuild his GSR trans before I started doing them. Not sure what all he had replaced in terms of sleeves/hubs but it def got carbon synchros (Gearspeed at the time - now Synchrotech) and it still shifts fine with 25,000+ miles on it (he had other cars to drive so the mileage isn't much, but even his younger sister drove it for a year or so without issue).
That's about the most longevity I know of with them, but the car was never raced much once they were installed. So they haven't seen too, too much high rpm usage, but definitely beat on a good bit.

Good to know but i bet those were the coated synchros, these new ones with the liner are different and they are supposed to last longer. Hopefully they last as long as your buddies car with the improved liner.

Im in the same boat. I don't really race my car and it never sees 9,500 rpms since it has a stock bottom end. I would like something to last 40,000 miles. Ive talked to a few other members and transmission builders and they tell me the same thing that Honda Bull said, Its all about how you drive it and the maintenance. I still would like to hear more from other owners before I make my purchase.
I got the complete kit from Dave at Synchrotech and ill let you know how it goes after install. Dave is a real nice guy to deal with and knows his stuff and great staff too.

Are you doing a complete rebuild or just syncros? Im about to buy mine as I need to install them while I have the availability.
A complete rebuild.
Got everything done and finally drove it for the first time this morning. The shifting was really no different then oem but that was at lower rpms so I suppose i was expecting more after reading comments like "shifts like butter" but that may be in the higher rpm racing scenario where the carbon synchros shine.
As far as the 5th gear LS swap im happy with the results the rpms dropped about 500 at 80mph and from what i read about people complaining about the mod with needing to wind up 4th gear before they go into 5th was not an issue at all. It could be b/c i have a fresh motor and compression is on the up and up so plenty of power to shift from lower rpms from 4th to 5th is a non issue and hopefully in the long run it pays off doing 100miles daily commuting.
Time will tell how the carbon synchros hold up, the oem synchros had no wear on them at all so i suspect with the extra protection wear from the carbon lining they will last even longer. The sleeves on the other hand were another story and they needed to be replaced. The aftermarket sleeves i got from Synchrotech will hopefully last longer since they are made with stronger material.

I put easily over 20k on my cable B16A YS1 tranny with the carbon synchros from Synchrotech. Occasional breaking traction here and there. No problems. Shifts like butter.
Got them off Ebay too!

When you state it shifts like butter i think my definition of butter is different than everyone else. The shifting is smooth but it's not frictionless.
For a complete rebuild i would say compared to what you will pay for OEM it is since the oem parts come in a bundle for certain gears
