Default Auto-X. Fought the mighty WRX in the rain.

Had a blast today at auto-x. In was pouring rain for a few hours before the event and stopped about halfway through. Stayed nice and cloudy all day as well. The course was soaked with a few runoffs and alot of standing water. This was my first event in the rain and I was up against the other WRX's in my class. We got a total of six runs.

1st: DNF missed gate.
2nd. Spun it around and the timing lights and went around them. DNF
3rd. Spun it right then back left. 58 second run ( I think)
4th. Spun the freak again.
5th. Slowed down and took it easy. High 54 second run. Put me behind in my class by more than a second.
6th. Pulled it all togther and whipped out a 53.3 to give me second place in STX. Lost to Micheal Fiyak a pretty experienced driver in a WRX who also had coilovers. He ran a 52.5 which ended up being fastest time of the day.

Its not confirmed yet but I think I was second fastest of the day possibly third.

I loved running the car in the rain. I hate to say it, but we don't have that big of a disadvantage. I only had two clean runs and I knew of a bunch of spots I could have cleaned up. The WRX's really only had an advantage at these really slow 1st gear tight sweepers at the both ends of the course. One was really off camber going up hill so I really had to wait to get on the gas.

I give rain auto-x

You kept spinning out? What tires did you have on?

I beat all the local 2.5 RS Scoobies at my first AutoX in the rain with my stock RE10's. There were like 5 of them with some damn good drivers. I felt the RE10's did quite well for wet grip as well.

damn good run.. I got destroyed by WRX's in the rain at the autox. Maybe it is just my driving, but still. the rain really caught me by surprised. Never drove hard in the rain before that time, but it was fun. Good job nonetheless. FYI, I had on the kumho estas 712's also which were suppose to be good in the rain. Ok I admit, my driving sucks hehe

You guys must have very low turnout in the mod classes if a car from STX gets the FTD.

It was raining at my local autoX event today as well.

Mod guys didn't show up so I ended up with FTD. Hell yeah, my first FTD ever and certainly not my last. All this on crappy *** Kumho 712 Ectas.

That's correct. I guess they don't like playing in the rain.

I run Potenza SO-3's which are killer in the rain. I was pushing the car too hard and our course has alot of off camber stuff. A bunch of turns occured as you dropped down off a ridge. Lift throttle there and I don't care what tires you're running because you're fixing to be looking back the way you just came.

I'm also going to start working on left foot braking. I'm now beginning to really see the advantages of it.

Sounds like you were just pushing it too hard. Rain or shine I've AutoX'd actively for 2 yrs and not a lot this year, but I've only spun out my R one time.

Sounds like you're lifting off the throttle too quickly.

In this case it would have made sense to do all your braking in a straight line before the turn and go into it way slower than you would have in the dry.

Precisely. Brake before, accelerate out. Wise words that were once said to me in my early days of AutoX.

Yeah I was lifting too quickly. In the section I was talking about it was best not to lift at all. It was a very fast section of the course just took some guts to tackle it. I got it down though (apparently) just didn't have enough clean runs to fix a few of the rough spots.
