Can we stop thw whole "rice" thing??
When I was 16 I bought my first Honda chrome taillights were a must have. Now, after the LS swap I never got to it, but still the fact remains. A few cars and a few years later I’m driving my EG with nothing cosmetic but a Type R front lip and some factory DOHC VTEC stickers. What happened? Did I out grow “ricey” things or was I swayed away from them by everyone else?
OKAY, so let’s set the record straight. When a person buys a car to tune and personalize, the main thing other than what’s under the hood (if it matters to them) is that they make it look how they want. However, the view of the rest of the tuner community DOES matter. No one wants a car that everyone calls “ricey” every time they see it, even if it is exactly how they want it.
Now, why must our Honda community be so harsh to everyone who has a cosmetic mod they don’t like? Lately everything is getting flamed for being “rice”. It started with giant spoilers, tons of stickers, and body kits, then every aftermarket headlight or taillight, now every stock piece of anything painted a different color is considered “rice” and any owner with these mods has to deal with crap from everyone. How many posts do you see of a clean Civic lookin’ sexy, and the first five posts on it are, “rahah, look at those ricey foglights” or something of the sort. Is there really something wrong with painting stock wheels a different color? I’m sure the owner of the car thinks they look better and they don’t perform any differently, so why is it wrong? Why is a Home Depot front lip wrong and a Type R lip okay? Let’s be honest, I really doubt the car’s going to be faster with the ITR lip. How can people call something “rice” when their car is adorned with $120 “JDM towhooks” that are NOTHING but cosmetic?!!
Every day I find something new to be added to the “rice list” that I never expected, and every day I find something that makes me say “wow, that would look real sick on the Civic”, then dismiss it because I realize that it’d be “rice”, and my car and myself would be less of a Honda tuner with it according to the community.
My point is, leave people alone. Give them props for being creative or original, even if you don’t like it personally. A lot of times people (mainly young kids) are just trying to customize within their budget, so leave them be. Yes, sometimes people throw on a 2’ spoiler and are really asking for it, but at least try to be nice. If things stay this way there’s going to be nothing left except bone stock looking cars and whether you believe it or not the Honda scene is going to DIE.

You know I accept the word ricer. Back in the late 90s we were all called ricers. Now everyone uses the term so freely. Oh JDM is rice, Tow hooks are rice, Sticker bombing is rice. Whatever. Build your car for you. People are so worried about what the forums thinks or what's so cool. Some people need to have a little more self confidence and STFU.

If you dwell so much on what people think of your car, you're obviously a "ricer". Whether or not you like to admit to it, you're looking for a response from the way your car appeals to people. Why not just build a car to suit yourself, and ignore the trash talking people give you for it. Who cares what they think anyways? It's not like they paid for it.
PS. Writing a long-winded diatribe here stating your disgust with how people respond to certain car modifications is about as useful as throwing a penny in a fountain.

you can stop it for yourself, but in everyone elses eyes we will always be looked upon as ricers, even if you have very well built quick honda.
As far as within the community, thats not stopping either, people will always have their opinion, and even things that aren't ricey will be looked upon as ricey by some, bottom of the line is you simply CANNOT please everyone, so stop trying to be captain america and stick to just pleasing yourself.

and lol @ op with an eg with "type r" lip.
Thanks to everyone for the positive comments.
You can't honestly say the opinion of your peers doesnt matter. People call your car rice and youre not going to be happy.
All the Type R lip comments, I was clearly referring to the common ebay "Type R" lip, that is pretty widely accepted, guess i forgot the quotes. (the point was is I still have some "rice")
The reason I made this thread is because i stumbled upon a Subaru thread one day, and saw this kids build that would get ripped to the point that the kid would cry and sell the car if it was on Honda Tech. But you know what? Those people told him good job, said his aftermarket headlights looked sweet, ect.
I'm not going to insult where its obviously need to some of you people. Hopefully youll be a little more civil now. (im sure an ignorant few will say they will now be harsher on "ricers"). OH WELL.

The OP is right. I much rather have hideous ebay modified cars to look at; than anything that looks moderately stock.
- It will be much more entertaining for me

me to! OP i agree with you for the most part, really from day one i just decided to say screw what the general population things of my car, I want my car to look how I want it to be because i'm the only one whos opinion matters when it comes to my car.
One could also look at it as why the hell would someone spend thousands of dollars to make your car look like another stock car(example usdm integra to a jdm integra).
Overall it just comes down to what people see as acceptable and usually when anything is perceived as different its looked down upon. At the end of the day as long as you like your own vehicle that's all that matters.
