Icon2 Help or ideas for side veiw cameras

hey all, i was wondering if anybody has tried this or has any ideas on what i could do. I don't have the funds to replace both side view mirrors so i checked online for alternatives and came across something about using cameras instead of mirrors. i checked out the prices on everything (2 cameras, wiring, and 7" LCD screen) and the collective price was just a few dollars more than 1 replacement side view mirror! sorry for get carried away..

I am stuck on how to mount them without it looking bad, i was thinking bout keeping the housings but beyond that no clue, ANY IDEAS?
Thanks

Uh what? I don't know where you're seeing a 7" LCD with cameras and what not for under $120

Probably not legal either to not have the driver side mirror, etc.

Like TheMuffinMan is pointing out, side mirrors are less than the costs of a monitor screen and cameras.

well im getting them shipped from overseas.. Alot cheaper... but yeah i thought about the legality of it... what do u think if i kept the housing and put a stationary 2-way mirror in with a camera behind it.. that would work eh? and i checked the price on the mirror... cut to size the would run me approx. $20 each.

i agree and i will say that it is illegal to use the cameras instead of mirrors (at least on the driver side or even passenger if you have tint)

have you thought about maybe going to a junk yard or going on craigslist....i mean it is a almost 13 year old car

or you can even go as far as to custom fitting some civic ones

Your idea makes sense, it's simple enough to understand. What are you asking exactly? It's all up to you if you want to do it. If you aren't too sure on how to mount and wire a couple cameras and a screen AND your tight on cash, I'd say find yourself some accord mirrors, they can be found new and used for cheap, like both sides for $100, seriously. Moisture and humidity problems could arise, like camera lenses fogging. Another thing to consider is quality of components, no camera and screen combo will be as quickly responsive or as clear as a glass mirror and the cheaper you go on the screen and camera the worse you can see. Do some research on lcd screens, wiring and 12v cameras, you will see that to get a camera and screen with some nice specs, it will cost you much more than plastic mirrors with a piece of glass in it.

I would personally make weather proof housings out of factory power mirrors, get two cameras (Digital or optical zoom work be bad a**) and two screens (One screen would be annoying IMO). Mount the screens and cameras to the motorized plates in the mirrors and have the ability to adjust the screen and camera from in the car simultaneously. Or you could mount the cameras to the factory mirrors and mount the screens to the pillars to allow for independent aiming of screen and camera?

I like the idea, it's two back-up cameras being used for side/rearward viewing, DO IT

finally somebody that gets it! and yeah ur right about the quality issue, I will have to look into it further but yea i think im doin it, thanx man but tell me what do u think about this: if i made the weather proof housing out of non power mirrors( power mirrors have no room to work with behind the glass) and replace the original mirrors with 2 way mirors, then i could put the camera directly behind the mirror... use the mirrors in the day and cameras for nightvision .. yeah thats sound good to me

Thanks AccordVT!

(Please pardon my grammar, I'm just excited about this.)

If you are honestly under the impression that buying cameras and LCD from overseas, then fabricating mounting brackets, then running wiring, then configuring an LCD, then configuring whatever control unit for the camera is going to be cheaper than purchasing replacing mirror glass or the whole housing I do not know what to tell you.

What I linked to is $40 shipped for a whole brand new aftermarket mirror housing. You are not going to replicate that price for a camera/lcd setup period. And if you somehow do, you will get a shitty camera and a shitty lcd regardless of what country it is coming from.

Is the idea 'neat' ? Maybe, personally I think it is retarded and has very limited use - how are you going to view both sides back and forth? Sit there and click buttons?

For a show car maybe you get 'cool' points, for practical uses it is a horrible idea.

where's your imagination old man? not everything has to be by the book, thas why its called customization and as for the overseas thing... just cuz u cant find cheaper prices doesn't mean its not possible... or are you the king of retail? Btw my apologies for offending ur little girlfriend but you didnt have to report me... childish...

P.S- I'm pretty sure my post asks for help and ideas, maybe even a little constructive criticism, but nowhere does it say: Hey jackass! Yeah you over there, check out this post, let it be an outlet for your inadequacies, come and let out all of your negativity, so you feel like a man again!..lol

cheers

I like how my post got deleted. I thought it was quite pertinant to the subject at hand.

The OP asked what our opinion was about his future "modification" and I gave it to him.

The consensus is that it is most likely a bad idea and the OP wants to get mad that we do not agree with him.

All I have to say is that you guys are posting in a troll thread.

I actually hope you do it and prove me wrong so that you can be the guy with the 12 year old accord with cameras for mirrors. Have fun.

wow...dont you hate when the op goes and asks for opinions on something and then complains when he doesnt hear what he wants

THIS IS A STUPID IDEA TO USE CAMERAS AS SIDE MIRRORS...dont you think if it was a great idea it would have been done on a bmw or mercedes already...whats going to happen when your low quality short out...i dont get how you just cant replace the mirror with maybe another mirror

so yea... i finally did it.. and i used two way mirrors in a manual side view housing. I installed 2 mini fpv cameras with fpv PnP transmitter reciever system off of a friends rc plane, connected it straight to my boss stereo, video quality is great but its not ideal as a side view mirror but its great for blind spots and the mirrors are doing there job as well..

Oh and the cameras and and fpv pnp system all together cost approx. 400 new but i got them for free! its true what they say 'one mans trash...'

all you haters can shove it

Post pics. And now you have to re-learn your instincts on driving. How long will it take you to stop looking for where your mirror used to be and then realizing you have cameras now? Just wasn't worth it.

In 24 hours you have this fully functional? I doubt it.

Just an FYI, I'm 23, far from an old man. However I am reasonable when it comes to modifications.
