do a search for High Hydro carbon output and what causes it.

The main reason though , is not complete combustion, wich can result from poor ignition system ( wires, plugs, car, rotor ).

Did you change those ?

^This

And also check the ignition timing with a timing gun.

If your CO readings are normal, the engine is misfiring. The hydrocarbon reading is high because unburnt fuel is passing through the engine.

As stated, check your plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. It wouldn't hurt to check the ignition coil too.

Also, it would be good to post your engine modifications for this sort of problem.

If your not running a cat, it can cause your motor to let unburned chemicals exit out of the exhaust which will cause you to fail. I had the same problem with my motor, no cat, high HC levels. Threw a cat on it and passed with flying colors. Just that little bit of extra heat makes a world of difference.

lol i failed my test twice today because my HC PPM was high also, first test at 10BTDC my HC & (CO) reading at 15mph max 96 (0.59), ave 38 (0.14), measured 164 (0.58) at 25mph max 79 (0.51), ave 30 (0.11), measured 119 (0.27), now on my second test i adjusted the timing to 14BTDC my HC & (CO) reading at 15mph max 96 (0.59), ave 38 (0.14), measured 115 (0.64) at 25mph max 79 (0.51), ave 30 (0.11), measured 189 (0.59), now it helped my HC a bit but it screwed up my CO, the smog technician told me to adjust my timing higher to 16BTDC, what should i do? stock 1992 Honda Civic CX (Canadian model) D15B7 but i've got an AEM smog legal intake on there, the filter is kinda dirty i'm thinking replacing that should help, along with adjusting the timing, any advice would be much appreciated

Sorry, but that's probably one of the most convoluted posts I've ever read.

Make your own thread in which you CLEARLY describe the problem.
