CEL problem - How Bypass EGR for 97 HX Civic?
Yo what's good I'm back again I just got a 97 Civic HX and I am try to find a way to bypass the EGR. The EGR was cleaned and the check engine light comes on around every 125 miles then I have to dissconnect the battery and reset the ECU. So I'm trying to by pass it to get rid of this problem with out sending 160 dollars on a part I really not need on my car.
You can't reset the ECU check engine code by disconnecting the battery in an OBD-II car. Just because the light went away when you disconnected the battery, it doesn't mean that reset the code the computer kept internally. You need a code reader to not only get the code to see what it's complaining about (it could be about another issue) but to also reset this code.

This doesn't mean that the same code won't come right back just as soon as the same conditions that set it off before occur.
For instance if this guy's EGR code came up after having driven above 1500rpm for over 3 minutes, then unless he fixes the problem the code will come right back regardless of if the code is cleared with a scan tool, pulling the ECU fuse, or disconnecting a battery cable.
heyy guys, i have a 98 civic hx auto, my emissions is due next week and i cant figure out how to fix this problem with the egr valve. i checked all the hoses to see if they are connected and they are, replaced the egr valve, cleaned out the egr port, and still the cel comes on and same p401 code comes on. anybody know how to fix this problem or have any idea what could be the issue? thanks.

The only code it is for the EGR value I just took it off and cleaned it I just got a p28 ecu I just need to get it chipped if that doesn't then I'll be kicking out for a new EGR thanks for the help.
Did you just post a similar thread not long ago? Automatic HX? If so the P28 wont help you for 2 reasons:
1) It wont communicate with a scan tool which is automatic fail as far as emissions go in most states
2) It wont control the CVT tranny

i posted the similar thread, and i cleaned the ports and passage ways today and there was a **** load of build up in those areas. hopefully this fixes the problem.
if you run a p28 with jumper you will fall emissions because the p28 with jumper harness will not let a scan tool connect to the the car

i cleaned the ports, chamber, and solenoid with carb cleaner. made sure the ports were unclogged etc, i got the same CEL 80-100mi later. i assume the only thing left is to buy a new egr? my car has 191k, i bought it a week ago and drove it 275 miles home with no code, and after driving around town its thrown the code 3 times

it basically says insufficient flow, which youd think cleaning would solve, however the CEL can be vague and im assuming ive got a bad solenoid
Maybe you can try manually actuating the solenoid and see if it moves? Short the solenoid to get it to move? Maybe it's stuck from the caked on carbon!! Don't toss out that EGR valve though because they're worth at least $200 new maybe $100 used.
