alarm for the civic
the quality of installation and how well they hide the wiring, brain, starter kill relays, etc.. is more important than the actual model number or make of the alarm... if your looking to pay a basic price.. you'll get a basic install.. it will function and work w/o problems for the most part and work as a convenience.. but when it comes down to its actual function.. protecting your vehicle... an alarm w/ a basic install (brain under the dash, wires right there when u pop the dash).. its not going to do much in terms of security w/ a basic install...
w/ that said...
I think the Viper/DEI 550 or 600 models should suit you fine...

I have and like the one from http://www.compustar.org
had no problems with the unit (have it two years) but the install was fucked from day one.
besure to get a person who knows what they are doing- not guessing!

There really is not best or anything. You want a excellent quality install but a good alarm. I will tell you this though.....An alarm is not going to stop them if they want it. It is only a deterent. You should also use common sense and park your car in a nice well lit place. Don't blast your stereo in parking lots and things. Just be sensible. If you want to keep your car from getting stolen also then I say that you should also get that thing (I can't think of the name) that locks your steering wheel and your clutch and maybe even a pager alarm. I hear bad things about the pager alarms though sometimes.
your probably referring to the Club (steering wheel lock) or similar... and Autolock (for brake or clutch) or equivalent... manual kill swithes that work independant of the alarm/after the alarm is defeated is also good... but yeah all these are deterents.. if a pro wants your car they'll find a way to get it..
Generally if they truly want it they will just tow it. Most common way that I know of is smash and grab though. There really is no way to keep stuff from being stolen. You just have to minimize the risks and such. I try to hide EVERYTHING. But I think that since this is a girl a pager alarn may not be the best choice for her though. Unless she is a bad ***
But I say that she should just be careful. I think that the lock thing I am talking about goes on the steering wheel then from there goes down and locks the gas and the clutch. I think it is all one piece. I could be wrong though.

like a club.. can't they just cut the steering wheel and spread the cut halves apart to slip off that mechanism then? I think the autolock (mounts in brake or clutch pedal) and club twin hooks (you'd have to cut 2 points to slip it off) would be better... yeah if they really want it they'll get it (pro theives) but this setup along w/ an alarm and other devices would probably throw off a lot of amateurs.. and most thieves you'll encounter will be amateurs
