Help troubleshooting starting issue
Hey everyone,
I drive a '91 sedan with a d15b2. Over the last month or so it has been cranking slower when it starts, but has still been starting and running fine. Then in the last week or so it's been cranking slower and slower every start, and when I tried to start it this morning it turned over once and won't turn at all now. At first I just thought it was the colder weather, and I would have to plug the block heater in soon but it looks like that isn't the cause.
All the dash lights come one normally, and headlights/highbeams and stereo and everything works, so I'm assuming my battery (which is fairly new) is not the culprit. It clicks under the hood when I try to start it, but nothing happens. I had a similar problem with one of my old cars, a 1985 FWD corolla sedan, and the cause was a corroded wire connecting the starter solenoid and the starter.
So I'm guessing this is either the solenoid, or the starter itself. I don't think it's a grounding issue because of the gradual failure, but rather a part dying. I thought I would ask here for and experience with a similar issue, or helpful advice. Thanks!

Have you tested the starter yet?
go over all connections and test the starter.
i actually had a issue like this and the main power (big thick wire from battery to starter) had corrosion inside of it.

Next time, try to read the FAQ's first. (:

Thanks guys, and I'll read the FAQ now.
Turns out my battery is just dead and the other electricals only worked when the headlights weren't turned on. So my starter/solenoid isn't the issue. BUT, now I have to find out if the battery is the problem, or the alternator.

If its running fine once its on its most likely the battery.
2 days ago we had a customer with pretty much same symptoms as you, but he was swearing it wasn't his "new <1 week old battery" after about 10 minutes into the diagnostic I had stopped and informed him that was the culprit, he felt I didn't do a thorough job n hadn't spent enough time on the car. I did a quick amperage draw test while car is off to see if it had a slow drain, it passed. Then I checked n the alternator was putting 12.8v while running @ battery, (too low) n it did not raise when additional load was added. When I disconnected the battery while running the voltage @ the cable was 14.3. So I replaced the battery and all problems went away, it started putting out 14.1 @ battery with everything reconnected, and I got an apology. He jus couldn't believe a new battery could be bad.
Check what I jus went over, its simple n also a common problem. So next time you can test it yourself with a basic volt meter and a few mins out of your day
