Cool. The exhaust outlet location is going to look neat.

oh no, i'm using the mig to tack since i'm working it all by myself and nobody is there to hold the pipes in place, and tig to stich it.

the power goals have allready been met, 1160 HP @ 8400 rpm
the engine was tuned and built by norris design.

FYI you can actually do that lol. I've burnt hundreds and hundreds of lbs of 308 solid wire.

I always work by myself and I never tack with a mig......its called a Sharpie you should buy a few.

Yeah and you "can" mig weld aluminum. Doesn't mean its the right way,

You'd really freak if you walked into my shop. I not only use MIG....it's flux core! Of course I do use Sharpies though.

To the OP, looks good. I'd like to see a pic with the bumper on, I'm curious how it looks completed.

And how about the thousands of semi-trailers that are out there that carry 50k+ lbs. of freight on our public highways and are built of aluminum? You think those are tig welded? Think again, its called a mig with a spool gun.

Just food for thought.

You learn how to take some constructive criticism and become a better fabricator from it.

I've built plenty of high quality exhaust systems from aluminum and stainless. I can tell you I would never be able to charge the fab rate I do if I was caught tack welding with mild mig wire.

how does it has to do with anything? who told you to use mild setup? IF you would use any.

my tig welder is a simple lincoln invertec 155 which is a scretch start.

btw, you can see in the 8th & 9th picture that the bends that has the stickers on then are mild.

Ok, learned something new.

I consult for a trucking company that uses Bulk Tankers for hauling Plastic Resin made by a company called J&L Trailers. From my knowledge, the truck mechanic at this place stated J&L uses a spool gun to weld all their trailers.

And I agree.

I did a mitsu header for a friend. got the first lengths welded to the flange, then with the pieces in the car i tacked the next few pipes on using some cheap cheap cheap mig he had, just so i didn't have to keep going back and forth between garages.
well as soon as i struck the first arc with the TIG i realized what a stupid idea this was..
ITS LIKE TRYING TO WELD A CLOWN
went back to making 3 lines with a sharpie and taking my sweet *** time.

that car is sweet, love the rear cooling setup.

interesting build. i am curious why there is a supercharger mounted on there, and even more curious why nobody else pointed this out?

WTF? You know almost everything aluminum of significant production volume will be mig welded right?

Dang, that is a very crazy colt. I'd like to see how the dyno graph looks.

No doubt he does, but apparently a one-off 1000hp evo/colt setup requires TIG welding on a non-structural member.

ATSMATT, please redefine what you mean by "the right way". Is it wrong to not care soley about looks? I've seen TIG welds weaker than JB-weld, they weren't fusion welds either. I've also seen TIG welds that cracked a 2nd time after repair work with a MIG (by a pro) - ironicly the MIG welds held.

We are on a automotive forum where we weld on cars so I'm not even considering the uses of a spool guy out side of building exhaust, intercooler piping, catch cans radiators etc. I know there are many places where mig is the best welder. That is why i own both a tig and mig.

Stop being a selective reader for a second and realize what I'm saying here. I think it is wrong too tack weld stainless steel with mild steel wire and even more wrong to weld mild bends to stainless.

This is a welding/fabrication forum where we come to learn new techniques and grow into better welders as well as share our best work. There is a good amount of fabricators that are better than me on this forum. When they point something out to improve my quality of work and make me a better fabricator in the end I listen.

I'm loving the tubular section holding the rear diff. That looks money! Any more shots of it? Good work on the rest aswell!

Well you should have been more clear. Of course it's wrong to tack ss with mild wire or use mild bends with ss straights because you're cheap. I'll hop right on that bandwagon with you bud.

You simply said, " are you mig welding stainless?" Be more clear and we would have avoided all this.

btw there is not a damn thing different about a weld done with a push pull gun vs a spool gun. It's just damn annoying to have to change those itty bitty spool gun sized rolls of wire during production work. You can also run bigger diameter wires with a push pull.

Pulsed mig on AL will put 90% of the tig welded AL you have seen on the internet to shame and it was done in a 3rd of the time

I can tack with a tig and handle control as fast as I can with a mig anyway. Not there would be anything technically wrong with tacking a damn exhaust with mig(with 308 wire).
