I bought a used dohc zc motor last year and have started doing a rebuild on it. Head was done, valves were done, block is going to be done, crank and cam shafts were taken out and checked. Have arp head studs, rod bolts and nuts and basically, new oil pump, new water pump, everything is getting taken apart and cleaned/resurfaced/replaced/reconditioned, basically it's going to be a fresh rebuild.
Shortly after buying the motor, I bought a rebuild kit off of an online auction site that starts with an E and rhymes with Bay. So the kit I bought was put together by a company called JIS. It includes all new bearings and thrust bearing, seals, head gasket, intake and exhaust gasket, spark plug tube seals, valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, valve stem seals, piston rings, and other random crap.
I've already used the parts to rebuild the head and now I'm working on the block. Have any of you guys used a JIS kit? I am thinking that since I'm taking down the whole motor this far, I really shouldn't be using the JIS kit... It seems to me like the JIS kit would be the weakest link...
What do you guys think? Should I take the head apart and rebuilt it with fresh Honda stuff? Or are some parts good and others not so good from JIS?
I want to at least get a Honda head gasket, I hear the JIS ones are crap. By the way, what head gasket is the strongest and will fit the best for the dohc zc?
I guess the reason I'm writing this is because I'm a little worried about the questionable JIS parts - will they cause engine failure 1000 miles down the road? 2000? 5000?? I would think that a good rebuild on that motor should give me at least another 150,000 miles...
Please let me know your experiences with JIS stuff and what other stuff you guys recommend. I'm trying to stay on a budget too, but i've been putting more and more money into this car/motor, haha.

is this an actual JDM DOHC ZC and not 86-89 Integra D16A1? if so, i hope you are buying the right parts for it - i wouldn't use anything but OEM Honda parts for a complete rebuild
Do you have any idea what the part number is for the ARP head studs? I heard there was a discrepancy with the part numbers, and one of the middle head studs being too long.

I heard that too, and I hear some people had to grind it down to make it work. I think the old srt-4 kit is good, but the new srt-4 has the longer bolt or something. Something like that. I don't remember clearly, I bought them a year ago. I'll have to look at the packaging sometime to get the part number, I might be able to check this weekend.
for my dohc zc rebuild i used KING bearings and had my crank and eagle rods micro polished and spec matched so that everything is the same. as for the head studs i had a custom set made because of the back middle stud was too long in just about evey kit i got out of srt or vw. i can get the part numbers if need be just need some time to DIG through my pile of reciepts!
