what turbo for fast spool and 350whp max
as Im putting all my parts together Im having a really tough time deciding on what turbo to run. its going on a rods and pistons d16 with a cast iron mani. I would like to stick with a t3 exhaust flange because of the availability of t3 parts and manifolds.
what Im looking for is a turbo under $600 at the very most. Id love to have a 16g like spool with the ability to make 350whp max. does precision or Garrett offer any small t3 turbos like this? I was thinking if I couldn't find any thing to run I planned on just getting an adapter to run a 16g with my manifold.

$600 new or used? A gt28 would be a great choice from garret, but they are about double that price. Borg warner might having something closer to $800, but not sure.
If $500 is your price, you might want to look into a regular Garrett t3/t4 57 or 60 trim. They are capable of ~450hp and they cost about $600 brand new. The spool is good as they are not too big, but not quite as good as the ball bearing.
For the price though, there are not that many choices, unless you find them used.

used is def an option as for what im looking into. I had a garrett to4e 57 trim and it was much laggier then id like. its gonna be tuff since its such a small motor spooling to turbo.
The 57 trim would be perfect for that! t3/t4 57trim. Garrett makes them and brand new they arent that bad @ all. I am not really sure what spool would be like for a single slammer, but I had a junkyard bone stock ls motor with 200k on it, and it would full spool @ 3k all the way to redline. I miss that little turbo on the street!!! Spooled so fast It was just a GREAT turbo for a street car/partial track car. If you don't plan on getting better than 11's that turbo is probally perfect.

does any one know how that garrett t3 super 60 would compare to an old thunderbird turbo off the 2.3l motor? I found one for cheap locally and Iv heard people saying that they are really fun for sohc motors. maximum power out put is def not my main priority, I just want to have a fun street motor.
The T3 off the thunderbird should be a pretty good choice.... 3k full boost and can prob net you right around 300ish with supporting mods. There are different versions of this turbo, and I dont know which years of the T-bird and the mustang that got the super 60 Some have the 63 housing, some have the 60, and some have the 42 housing.

I bet that it would be better on a honda just because of how well our heads flow compared to thunderbirds.
why not just buy a brand new one? it fits in your budget and you know there wont be problems with it

because if I get this one used in good shape for $75 then I have that much more money to budget in case any problems arise. Id always rather have more money in the bank when having a turbo car so I won't be stressed if anything comes up.
also Im really just a cheap *** at heart.

iv done ok for myself so far. I do my own tuning so even if the turbo goes out down the road switching to a different one wont be much work as I can just re tune it my self without loosing any money. and this isn't my first turbo car but thanks for the input.
I looked at it, I wanted to get one for my old ls turbo I had but never got around to it, I was also looking into the s256 bw turbo.
Precision Turbo makes an entry level journal bearing turbo line in the 57 trim t3/t4 size for around 600 new. I know xenocron lists them on their website.
I ended up getting a used t bird turbo for $75 with the stock mani and down pipe which I think ill be able to sell to recoupe some of the costs. its the water and oil cooled .60/.63 and it seems like its in really good shape. Ill post results when I get it all running down the road.

I've tuned aseveral single slams with different turbos. Some on some small turbos like the t3 super 60 and the thunderbird turbo and some on 57 trims. Honestly the spool isn't much different between them and the 57 trim works great. Could even do a 50 trim for better spool and come out with about the smae hp levels.
