Default [Civic 92-95] USDM Fuel & Temp Gauge - Question

Hello,

I drive a 95 EDM-Ej2 with a low fuel warning light in the fuel & temp gauge.

I have now the chanche to adapt the cruise control to my car.

Gives on the USDM the fuel & temp gauges with the light for the cruise control and the low fuel warning light together?

Thanks

I think the question is does the USDM cluster have both the low fuel light and the cruise indicator. It doesn't, no north american '92 - '95 Civic had a low fuel light, and as far as I know no country that did have it had cruise control.

Yes, that was my question. Sorry, my english is not so good.

^ Also, just to clarify - the cruise control indicator light is in a different spot than the low fuel light. How do you get them to work together on the same cluster? Well, watch my DIY page in the coming months. (Link in signature below.) If you're in Europe, I recommend you find a Canadian fuel/temp gauge cluster with the cruise control light - the USDM ones have that stupid "Unleaded Fuel Only" writing. (You need the whole cluster because it has a special, separate PCB/wiring board just for the cruise feature.) You can then add your low fuel light to this Canadian gauge.

No, DeSchlong, you understand me wrong.
The picture is only an example for the low fuel light.

At home I have two clusters. One EDM with the low fuel light and the another ist a USDM with the cruise control indicator light. The problem is at both clusters , that the chambers, which are not used (EDM - right chamber for the cruise control indicator -- USDM left chamber for the low fuel light) painted black and have no symbols for the function in it.

At my bad picture, you see under the engine check lamp an unused chamber (at the USDM-cluster there is the seat belt warning light).

So I searching for a fuel & temp gauge, that have both chambers with the symbols in it.

Regards

Right... it doesn't exist with both. You'll have to do it yourself by clearing off the black paint from one of them, then applying a sticker or something to the back of the cleared chamber. I've tried using brake fluid on the paint, but that didn't work (takes too long). Commercial product (paint remover from plastic) didn't work either. Other options that I will be trying are acetone or oven cleaner.

None. We are on our own in uncharted territory. I would encourage you to do this first before me. I won't be able to get to it for a while.

No problem.

Here the results from today:

NICE. This is what I'm talking about. How do you feel it turned out? Is that a crack in the bottom picture? Is it visible from the front side?

For the symbol I have purchased some laser-printable clear acetate, with a sticky backing (basically a laser-printable clear sticker). (You'll have to print it inverted/backwards to make it oriented the right way ... think about it and you'll see what I mean.) I have traced the low-fuel symbol in Adobe Illustrator. I can send you the file I've got in native Illustrator format as well as a pdf.

EDIT: Attached is the low fuel light symbol I created by copying the image from a JDM EG cluster. DO NOT change the scale of the page when printed, because it is set to be the correct (same) scale as the current symbol. I have posted two versions, A4 for our European friends, and Letter 8.5"x11" for Canada & US so there should be no need to fiddle with any scale settings.

Good luck with your project! And be sure to post your results.

No, is not a crack. This is a fluff from the polishing wheel. I first noticed him in the photo.

The offer by the symbol I would gladly accept.

Looks excellent. How does the size of the symbol compare to the original one on your EDM cluster? Does the yellow colouring shine through the same?

PS. It doesn't look quite centred.

Please BE CAREFUL when reinstalling the gauge - DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN the screws on the back of the cluster. You risk breaking the gauge!!!

Anyone know if the factory gauges can be laser engraved? I want to get a white faced EG6 SiR cluster and laser engrave the cruise control indicator on it (these gauges don't have the rectangular sections like the black ones do so I can't do what was done here)

Thanks.

The size from the EDM is a little, little bit greater.

The OEM symbol are really black and the yellow colouring doesn't shine through. My copy machine is over 10 years old and the black cartridge is not more the best.

But so often so the lamp should not light up.

Thanks for the hint with the screws.

Here a compare:

Sorry for the bad english an the bad picture.

Hey, flat_eric - so I finally got a chance to practice on a gauge cluster. My results were not as clean as yours. Can you describe your technique? I used a Dremel at 5000RPM, with a Dremel #414 half-inch polishing disc (looks like the same one as in your photo).

I can remove the paint, but I also seem to be affecting the plastic underneath. I'm not left with a completely flat surface - I am creating grooves. Maybe I am putting too much pressure, still? Can you provide any other suggestions?

Update: I tried some acetone on my test gauge and it was a 100% success ... and very low-tech and low-effort.

Here is the comparison:

Looks good.

Unfortunately, I had done with the nail polish remover not so good experiences. The clear plastic was milky and opaque.

But my nail polish remover had no vitamin E. :D

If the irregularities from the other side to see?

I hope to use the up-shift arrow on my vx cluster for my low fuel light. i have messed up different gauges in the past for different reasons through the years. one was by overtightening the screws as well. Very nice and informative write-up!

I may have missed where it was mentioned. After, you clear out the black camber and fill it with a gas icon. Is there already a light in the retrofit USDM spot or is that something else that needs to be added ? I'm asking these questions because I have yet to pull out the cluster and see for myself.
