You need to read the code that the lit Check Engine Light indicates has been stored in the computer. Use a bent paper clip to jumper the small blue connector that you will find tucked under the dash on the passenger side. You'll know its the right connector because it's not plugged into anything. Once you jumper it, turn the key to the on position, but do not start the car. Just turn it to where all the dash lights come on. If you jumpered the connector properly, your Check Engine Light should start blinking. If you get no blinks at all, check the jumper and put the paper clip points on the other side of the metal tabs in the plug.
You need to count the short and or long blinks. For example, if your Idle Air Control Valve is acting up, you would read a code 14, which would be 1 long blink and 4 short blinks followed by long pause and then repeat. If it is a single digit code it will be short blinks only. Compare the code you get to the chart below. If the Oxygen Sensor has never been replaced in your car, I suspect the code you get is going to be related to it. The slightly hard starting and the stumbling are symptoms of it failing. If you smell any gas while the car is idling weirdly, that's another sign. A failing O2 sensor plays havoc with the air-fuel mix in the car and causes poor running.
You can also go to Autozone and ask them to read the codes. Don't be surprised if they ask you to use a paperclip, though. Good luck.
