High RPMs at start and check engine light
Hi guys. A couple of months ago, I swaped in a B18C into my 95 civic coupe. I noticed that as time went by, my revs, after starting my car in the morning, started up quite high. At first 1500, then rising to 2000, and now currently, around 2400. This is quite weird. I usually just let the car idle for a couple of minutes and the revs start dropping.
Another problem I'm having is that after driving, from a cold start, 10-15 minutes later, my check engine light comes on. If I turn off the car and start it back up, the light is gone, but will reappear soon. I've noticed that the light seems to come on right when the car reaches a certain temp. (Which is around a little less than half on my meter. That's where the temp stays after my car is warmed up to it's max I guess.)
Anyway, I'm not sure what to do about this. Any ideas?

When the CEL comes on pull over and don't shut the engine completely off. Pull the code and see what it is. You don't want to be driving around with a code on too long

Actually, I was at my friends place and I decided to see if I could check the code. I drove around for a while, came back, tried checking the code, but the CEL didn't flash... I've been driving my car with this light for a while now...

Wait a minute... if it was a MAP sensor problem, wouldn't it show up as a code 3 or 5? http://www.ecutecparts.com/ccodes/honda.html
Did you friend have the same problem of not being able to pull out a code?

Not to question your mechanic skill or knowledge, but how did you attempt to pull the code? I've never heard of the CEL on and not being able to pull the code. The more info, the better the chance of figuring out what is going on.

Actually, I was at Sears Point last night and I was talking to someone about this problem, and he said that he had the same problem. What he did was take out his Japanese ECU and pluged in a US one. After that, he was able to pull out a code.
He says that he knows a lot of people with CEL problems in their hybrids when they use JDM engines. Still doesn't make much sense though...

Re: High RPMs at start and check engine light (dilow)
I have the same damn prob right now as we speak. Mine just stays at 2k rpm's, im gonna run the check valves since im only putting out a code 3 with the map sensors. I tried messing with the IAC but still didnt lower the RPM's. I was told I may have some vaccuum lines mixed up. Im gonna try that as soon as heat go's away. I tried replacing the map sensor but still showed a code and still idles up at 2k rpm's. Ither than that let me know if you hear different. good luck with yours
I gotta B18A1 in my 92 HB with turbo
I also let mine sit for around 15 minutes to see if it would go down but no luck there.

Hmm... Map Sensor didn't do it.
Let me explain the rev problem some more. After starting the car, it goes up to about 2.5k. I let it idle for a while. Then it goes down a little, then it goes up a little, goes down a little, goes back up, etc. Of course, it goes down more than it goes up and eventually, the revs comes down to around 750.

Re: High RPMs at start and check engine light (dilow)
if ur idle is jumping up and down like that, u might have a defective fast idle valve. also check if ur coolant level is fine. also check if ur thermostat is ok. check vaccum lines to make sure they're in tight. also check ur IAC or EAC valve to see if it's working properly. these are just some of the variables that'll lead to a loping idle -- well, at least the above are the most common ones.

Re: High RPMs at start and check engine light (randyman)
Did you ever finger out the problem? Im having this problem also and am starting to think it is the Fast Idle Valve. They are $100 (that I don't have right now) from the dealer so I am having my boy @ the salvage yard look for one.

Re: High RPMs at start and check engine light (dilow)
I had the same damn prob, I gotta forced fed LS 92 HB and when I first started it it would do the same thing on a freshly fully built motor. ALl I did was check the O2 sensor, and tried other ECU's, the prob went away, ALSO check your VAccuum set up. These all played a major role in my car revving so high at starts.
hope this helps, if not email me, I may have other solution.
