98-0891 has one of my favorite pics!

I've seen a few people on here. One was asking about race fuel a few months ago. Can't remember who it was though.

Mine has a jackson supercharger, 10psi boost on stock ITR engine. ~3 rallies a year since I built it in 2003.

i was also the one who was asking about an E-85 tune a while back. might still go that route, evaluating a possible supercharging for pikes peak.

wouldn't a turbo work better at high altitudes because the air is "thinner"?

I had a SC on mine for a while and if you stay in the throttle hard the intake temps will hover around 210-230. Id think if your going to boost it for rallying a small quick spooling turbo would be ideal. Not to mention cooler boost.

exactly the type of information i was planning on seeking here, so thanks in advance. I've been going back and forth between the turbo/super debate, and really the only thing keeping me in the super debate is that the previous owner ran the car on pikes peak in '03 with a jackson s/c and had really good results. If I go turbo, it will surely be a small one. Suspect I might be able to find/fab a decent turbo setup cheaper than a good s/c. Thoughts?

Well I'm kinda the 1320 drag junkie here and no guru but the SC will have a more linear response and depending on the size of the turbo will affect the amount of lag you will have.
Someone with more knowledge than me can feel welcomed to correct me but I know you could use a small straight T3 with a 50 trim and great quick spool and not too much top end surge. I'd also consider 2" piping over 2.5". That might compensate for less lag time.
I could tell when getting into some spirited driving on the street once you heat soak the SC it becomes less responsive. I've always liked the idea of cooler boost so I'm leaning towards the hairdryer over the screws. Hope what I've said helps you make a proper decision. $.02

Different turbo manifolds and scroll types will affect the equation of spool time and turbo efficiency as well..... My choice would be a Full-Race top mount pro-am twin scroll manifold with an EFR turbo, dual INTERNAL wastegates. It would definately spool up quick and be able to hold up through the high rpms. Internal wastegates would have less possibility for failure, weigh less and cause less vibration. External wg's would be prone to cracking under all the stress rallying would cause.

Sounds good but wouldn't a top mount be laggy? I'd think he'd be better off with a log style mani to get a quicker spool.

I based my opinion off a conversation I had with Geoff R. of Full-Race this morning on the topic. We joked about doing it to mine and it turned into what he felt would be most competitive if I ever did...We discussed lag issues and thought the majority of the race would keep rpm's high enough that a tubular manifold would outperform the log and make up for it.

I know either set up would run, so it's not an issue of being "wrong" but I apologize if my opinion isn't the best

Your probably correct there about the top mount. But then again there goes my 1320 brain thinking of needing spool ASAP whereas you will be keeping the rpm's elevated most of the time in a rally race. Good point made.

guys, thanks a ton for the opinions above. i've done a bit more research, talked to some fellow competitors, and i've finally made the decision to go with a small turbo over the supercharger. given the length of the runs on pikes peak, i need cooler boost and surely need to avoid any heat soaking in the s/c. while i'm happy i finally have a direction, this throws me back into noob mode. as long as i've been racing i've never boosted a car before. i'm going to be searching in the forced induction section on this site for some starting points. i have no doubt i could assemble the thing myself, and fab up whatever is needed. where i really have no knowledge is how to select the size of the IC, running oil lines, controlling boost levels, etc. i have a moroso oil pan that's already threaded for an oil line so that should help. also have a hondata s300 in there already, as well as a walbro 255 and RC 440's. hoping to not have to change too much there. i'm a bit concerned as to how the DPR stage 6 head will deal with a turbo. anyone have experience there? i'm going to have a reputable shop here in denver tune the whole thing after i have it built, not gonna attempt that part myself...

on a side note, sent in the entry fee for pikes peak, no turning back now!
