Icon3 my gsr eating oil!!! HELP!

my gsr is eating lots and lots of oil. id say about 3 to 4 quarts in 2 days! i only drive to work about 5 miles away and school. smokes all the time from what my friends tell me when they are behind me. its a dark color smoke. its a 98 gsr with about original 78k on body and motor.

i already took off the head. exhaust valves are BLACK with gunk on them. my walls are fine. had a compression check and it was 250psi across when i bought the car (which was about 4,000 miles ago).

so please help! what do you guys think it is? valve seals? or piston rings?

Man, that's a lot of oil. Can rings even let that much through when they're worn?
Could be your head gasket or idk. Do all 4 cylinders and valves look the same?

your exhaust valves will be black w/some carbon build up. that's normal. if it were abnormal, you'd have lost compression. does it smoke under load? or is it when you start from a stop? or upon start up in the morning?
really should have done testing before you pulled the head though.
but since it's off now, swing it by the machine shop and have them pressure test it and resurface.
check that the engine isn't leaking externally as well

my car smokes like hell and i burn maybe a quart every month or so. if youre losing that much id say you probably have a leak somewhere, and a big one for that matter. maybe you scraped and sliced the oil pan or something.

there is no leak anywhere that i can find. i garage keep my car and my floor is pretty new since i built the house not too long ago. no drips anywhere on the floor or the motor. thats what i thought it was too.

its always smoking even when driven normally. my bumper is always black and there is no external leak. i dont want to take apart my block until im sure its my rings and not the valves. what do you guys thinK?

well, you're not really going to be able to test whether it's the rings, now that the head is off.

Im gonna say valve seals...I had a similar problem and usually it starts there.

You should have done a compression and leakdown test to see if the rings were problematic, but now that you have it completely apart, i would just visually inspect it. It will be more labor intensive than doing a compression and leakdown but you will get a closer look at everything that might need to be replaced.

What oil weigh are you running..?
And 250 psi across the board......that kinda sceptical on a b18c1. I had 240-245 across with usdm itr pistons in a b18c1 and ure saying 250 psi across in a b18c1...just saying. Since you have it apart. I would do what i did. New valve steam seals. New rings with a fresh hone. I use to burn about a quart a week. Now problably half a quart every oil change and that depends how i drive/if i hit vtec or not. Sometimes it doenst even drop between oil changes.

sooo much carbon build-up that the pistons are more dome than itr. lol
