Tire width and tire diameter are both measured AT THE BEAD, where the inside edge of the tire sits, NOT from the very edge of the lip. If the distance from the outer edge of the lip across the wheel to the opposite lip is 16", they are probably 15" diameter, because the measurement at the bead is smaller, usually by about an inch. The same thing is true when measuring the width (as illustrated below); if they measure 8" from the outer edge of one lip to the other, then they are probably 7" wide. (If there are no tires on the wheels, it should be easy to measure from one bead to the other, rather than from the edge of the lip.)

If needed I can get a small spacer and roll the fenders. Thanks for the suggestions.
If they are 15" wheels, 195/55-15 or 205/50-15 tires are the best sizes for your '96 Civic EX Coupe; however, neither of these should be mounted on 15x8 wheels. The maximum width for 195/55-15 is 15x7, and for 205/50-15 is 15x7.5 If it turns out that they are 16" wheels, you can use 205/45-16 or 215/45-16. None of these sizes should rub or need spacers or rolling IF you have the proper offset on your wheels (I'm not sure what offsets work best for your car).

15x7 is what they most likely are. also, do you have the proper lugnuts for those wheels?

Great info! Thanks! I will measure them again when I get home. Yes they were 16" across the face and 8" wide front to back so they must be 15x7. Kinda glad they are not 15x8. I will need to get those lugs to fit these. Is gorilla the only brand to make this style? Are there any available that will work if I decide to get extended studs? Appreciate the info.

McGard is another brand that makes spline drive lug nuts that may be suitable for aftermarket wheels with limited socket clearance. Click here.
