Icon6 Driving with no oil (ouch!)

I changed the oil in my 2007 Accord V6 so my wife and daughter could take it on a long trip. Unfortunately, I didn't check after removing the old filter, and the old gasket was stuck to the sealing surface. When I put the new filter on, it felt weird, but I just tightened it and sent them on their way. After 20 mi., my wife called and said they stopped because the engine was making a bad sound. The "extra" gasket had slipped out and all the oil was gone. I removed the extra gasket and put in another 4.5 qts--the engine seemed to still run OK so I sent them off again. After another 20 mi., they heard worse noises and the engine conked completely. I had it towed to a repair shop, but I'm afraid to hear what they say--any ideas what it will mean? I was hoping that the oil came out suddenly after driving for 20 mi., but if it came out at the beginning and then they drove 20 mi. ignoring the oil light, it might be bad!

Goodbye crankshaft... you can count on worn out cylinders/ rings and scored bearings. Could be a spun bearing or two, maybe even a bent rod. The engine probably got really hot so most seals and gaskets are done. I am sorry man but that is terrible news. Did the wife notice the temp gauge climbing while she was driving? If all the oil leaked out things could very well be bad

Time for a new engine...
Save all the accessories/electronics off the old engine. Perhaps you can sell them to re-coup some of the loss...Sorry to hear about your loss...

You're not the first person that's happened too. The v6s dont like being without oil at all, if it was a 4 there may have been some hope of saving it. Put a used or rebuilt engine in it.

You could always take this as an opportunity to rebuild it bigger and better!
Im not sure what kind of options there are, but im sure the accord forum would have lots of suggestions!
Stroker crank? High compression pistons? Headwork and cams? It would be cool to have a 350HP accord v6!
Or just a plain old boring stock engine would suffice...
