New Rider
Hey whats up. I'm a fairly new rider and super stoked to finally have a bike again. its a 01 Yamaha r6. I also decided to buy a shoei helmet which I love so far. I'm basically self teaching myself and have been doing well so far... I could use some good advice on turning and remembering what gear I'm in
. BTW anybody In socal want to help me get better and ride lmk
well here are some pics. I always like to view pics and I'm sure some of you do too

Nice one!
Well when riding at normal speeds turning is done by countersteering, so if you wanna turn right you have to turn the handlebars to the left which will tilt the bike to the right and turn that way. Low speed turning is done by turning to the side you wanna turn and then slipping the clutch and using the rear brake to stabilize it. As for remembering the gearing, well.. heh even I dont sometimes remember which gear I am in, usually I try to upshift from 6th ;P

my bad I guess I kind of confused you. I don't ride with the kick stand down. that's pretty much the first thing I put up. Yeah the 01s do have that sensor that causes the bike to shut off when in gear and the stand down.
Edit: anyways not trying to get on anybody's bad side. Thanks for the advice ^^^

the msf course is stupid but usefull to beginer riders
any locks are kew bro but jus like in the honda game if they really want your issshhh there nothing stoppin two guys from liftin it and throwin it in the back of a pickup

tips umm to be honest get out and ride thats the best tip put miles on your bike and remember wherever you look its where your bike will go lol
and like the cliche says theres 2 types of riders
riders that have gone and riders that will go down
sux but thats part of the sport not sayin it will be ur error jus alot of elemets you need to watch out for on two wheels and if you cant remember your gear and stoplights it doesnt hurt to shift down like 50 times to make sure ur in first lol then a half click up ur be chillen on neutral
and wen your riding jus listen to your biek itll tell you
insurance side imo for the yr and value id just get liability bro depending on your driving record
good luck and hope u enjoy ur bike

umm i dont think you should pay attention to that jus yet and for me at least i NEVER use the brake or clutch on a turn
and it's very rude to tell somebody that they're confused when you are the one that didn't realize what they said.
msf
edit: and it's usually a NEW RIDER that will leave the kickstand down, so i believe it's has a lot to do with this thread.
Thats really basic 101 slow speed turning, they teach that in the first theory and first actual riding class for license qualification here. You use the clutch to prevent the engine from stalling as you're going under the minimum speed where the engine can idle and you use the rear brake to stabilize the bike, as you keep some load on the engine and control the speed with it.
to clarify sure pull in the clutch to prevent your bike from shuttin off isnt that common knowledge thats good info for goin like 5 mph this is HT so we can assume he has a basic understandin of manuel transmission but hes askin advice for ridin so we should base our advise for him for city ridin or at least specify low speeds to a common indvidual could be like 20mph and on a lean pullin in the clutch wouldnt stablize the bike at all
and my point about countersteering thats advice for a novice rider not a beginer how confusin is it when your first learnin how to ride for someone to say if you wanna go left push right and vice virsa lets get him the basics down then when hes confortable lets improve his technique is all im sayin

Yes, but that skill is very useful in tight places where you cant even get up to 20mph, such as a parking garage, traffic, mall parking lot, pedestrian crossings, etc. As for countersteering, theres no if or buts, thats the only PROPER way to turn corners, theres no learning to "ride his own style", if he learns the wrong way its really hard to re-learn the right way.
I dont know about you guys over there, but over here the licensing course we have is alot different from the MSF as far as I've understood, here you have to do it in order to get licensed to ride a bike and it consists of 3 exams, written, handling and road riding. The toughest is the handling exam, because it consists of 6 exercises, 2 which are the ones you need to use the clutch/throttle/brake technique to pass, so thats why that skill is taught right there at the beginning, as you can only try it twice, if you fail twice, then you have to retake the whole 6...
This is the slalom part, not so easy when you do it with a 600cc, as you have to have minimum of 47hp.

1GPlusSH, We get 6 hours of supervised riding practice before the actual riding exams, the written one is taken after 6 hours of classes. Its pretty thorough, but since I've had my drivers license for a car beforehand I just got to do the 6+6, if I'd do the motorcycle license before car license (you can get a max 11kw bike license at 16 and a max 25kw bike license at 18), then you have to do the whole 9 yards which is alot more than what I did.
The cost for just the license for me was 600 euros, which was the cheapest I could find and some places want >1000euros for the course.
