Default pinion bearing

So I'm attempting to rebuild a manual rack for my 89 STD hatch and I want to replace the pinion bearing. Even though it looks ok I figure its 20+ years old and its only $6 to replace and a bunch of crud fell into it when I pulled the dust seal out. The book says that you cant replace it without replacing the pinion shaft too but it doesn't even look like Honda sells a pinion shaft with a bearing already on it. Is the idea that there is no way to remove the bearing without ruining the shaft? If anyone has replaced the bearing on the existing pinion shaft I'd like to know how it's done. Thanks.
